1992 VW Cabriolet Carat

triple white
Wolfsburg Edition
Due to my failing health my plan of completely restoring this fun car has ground to a halt and I need to switch to a car with automatic transmission since my left foot has become unreliable due to Neuropathy.
Here is the good, the bad and the ugly:
The good first:
Engine runs well and strong, has only about 173k miles, I am the seventh owner since 2013, the older gentleman who owned the car before me used it as tow car behind his RV.
I have had a lot of mechanicals fixed since he had not done much service over the years, many of the miles on the odometer are not really driven but were towed.
The cosmectical part was what I intended to go on working next but can not do it any more due to heart failure.
Parts that have been replaced since 2013:
rebuilt alternator, new tensioner bolt for the same, new 2 gauge battery cable, new battery clamps, many fuses because they were getting oxidized, new water pump, new thermostat, all new hoses, all new senders for temp, oil pressure, fan switch.
New starter last year.
New brake pads in the front and new caliper on passenger side.
Pretty much all light bulbs are newer and in good condition.
Had a rebuilt A/C compressor installed, system leaks a tiny bit but one can a years keeps it cold and going so to search for the leak would have cost a fortune time wise compared to the one $6 can of R134a.
Tires have all about 50-60 % wear left.
New tank fuel pump and sender, we cleaned out the outside pump and it runs fine, new fuel pressure regulator, cleaned the intake.
New washer pump and nozzle. Many new vacuum hose connectors.
All new belts including timing belt.
Newer Bosch Platinum plugs, new upgraded spark plug wires, new distributor cap and rotor.
New back up light switch and halogen bulbs in the back up lights.
New tie rod ends are included but not installed yet.
Extra alternator, a set of LED fog lights ( car originally came with them but were taken off bc. of the tow hitch, has switch on dashboard ), and some misc. parts and senders come with the car which I intended to replace or add on over time. Some extra LED bulbs also included but not installed.
Has a working aftermarket CD player, I changed the door speakers to Bose 5 1/4's and will throw in a 1990 Blaupunkt Aspen AM/FM/Cass/CD control deck if interested which would make it right for the time. ( The Blaupunkt has 4 x 15W / 35W max per channel ). Rear window has a defogger in working condition.
Brand new battery !
Needs:
Will need wheel bearings and left drive shaft some time, windshield is cracked in the middle half way up, inner rear view mirror is there but not installed, missing all badges on trunk lid, will definitely need a new cover for the top, and some rubber over the windows. I had a branch fall upon the rear end 2 years ago in a winter storm andtemporarilyrepaired the rips with Eternabond strips, fairly effective but not good looking. The wheels ( Gti tear drop style ) are sorta ok, what you would expect from a 24 year old car, 3 center caps are there but one definitely needs to be refurbished, I lost one somewhere.
Has 4 holes in the front bumper where the trailing hitch was installed which was removed, and the left corner need to be bondo'd and the whole bumper, the hood and the hatch painted.
There are some rust spots around the windshield ( not rusted through as far as I can tell ) that need to be fixed at the same time when the windshield is replaced, and few spots on the trunk lid ( bottom part ) and a few little spots here and there but when washed and polished still looks presentable as is.
The car is equipped with power windows, the driver side has either a bad wire ( most probable due to the water leaking in there ) it started to work intermittently so I did not use it over winter and now the switch and the relay operate but no power on the window ( in the worst scenario the motor might be bad but until it started having the problems it worked fine and with no noticeable uncommon noises ). The door itself won't stay open due to failing door holder -- a used one is included but not installed yet.
Needs shifter linkage adjusted ( special tool included ) but its still driveable as is.
It also has leather ( used to be white, now its more grayish white ) Recaro bucket seats in the front and matching upholstery in the rear. Carpets are the standard black stuff VW used for many years and are tired and could use replacing since it got wet on occasions. There are 2 small rips on the driver seat bottom.
There were only a couple of hundred Cabbies imported into the USA in 1992 since Europe had already the newer model ( 93 ½ ) body style, and only very few were 5 speed in triple white.
The right owner with the necessary health and ability to do a lot himself could have a little marvel on his hands since they start to get really scarce -- especially the Wolfsburg Edition.
I tried to describe the car as complete and honest as possible, I may have forgotten a few little things but not intentionally.
Have a lot of money in the car that I know I never will get back, hoping for a decent offer but nothing is carved into stone. Will NOT respond to low ball offers though.
If you are Cabby fan and have read what has been done to the car so far you will know how much in parts and mechanic time has been invested. I would hope the car will find a good home where someone has the time and gives the TLC it deserves, its a blast to drive, light and nimble and the 88 Gti engine that came in that years model is really running well and smooth. I wish the 5th gear on the tranny would have been a real overdrive since the drop from 4 to 5 is only a couple hundred RPM's -- but can be done if someone has the knowledge and get a different gear set for it.
Great gas mileage (over 30 mpg highway @75-80, mid 20ies in the city depending on how you drive).
All in all its a fun little car that needs to be finished to be great. One more year and you can drive it as a classic !
