1987 Porsche 944 NA Additional Info:
- All major recent service records.
- Engine runs smooth, starts quick every time. Timing belt was done 7,000 miles ago.
- Transmission shifts solidly and the clutch grabs tight.
- Rust free undercarriage.
- AC works perfectly (professionally converted to R134)
- Car steers tight and tracks straight. No leaks from the steering system.
- The interior is in near perfect shape, except for a couple of cracks in the dashboard.
- Seats work (manual slide, power lumbar), windows work, headlights function perfectly, power mirrors work intermittently.
- All gauges work, and dash lights were converted to LED for better night time visibility.
- The phonedial rims could use a good cleaning, but have zero curb rash.
- Rear seat was carefully removed to allow more room for the child seat. I can re-install it, or leave the child seat in place and include the rear seat parts. The rear seat has no tears or stains, it's in perfect condition. I've included a photo taken before the sear was removed.
- The OEM Vredestein expandable spare is in good shape. There is a functioning 12v pump, as well as the factory tool kit.
- Original owners manual with original maintenance book. Dealer service stamps for initial servicing through 1995
- All 4 OEM wheel locks and keys stored in the car.
- VA State safety inspection valid until 12/2018.
The maintenance records I have for work that was done professionally:
- The timing belt was last changed 9/2015, at 123,000 miles. $1600
- OEM Water pump and rollers 8/2015 - $400 in parts
- The AC system was completely rebuilt and upgraded to R134 in May 2012 - $1930
- Both clutch slave and master cyls were replaced in 6/2016 - $1000
- (I was told the last clutch disc replacement was about 2014, but there is no receiptfor this.)
- All brakes were completely redone 3/2015 - $1000
- All Rack and Pinion parts were replaced/rebuilt 2/2016 - $1200
Work I've done:- Parking brake pads were replaced 6/2018
- Heater box fixed 12/2017
- Exterior drivers door handle mechanism replaced 4/2018
- New CD player with bluetooth, and new door 4x6 speakers
- New odometer gear. There were probably 2000 - 3000 miles put on the car while this was inoperable. Odo currently shows 127,000, but I suspect it's ~130,000 and I've listed that in the ad.
- New DME relay.
This is my 4-season daily driver. I bought it to replace a Delorean which was my previous daily driver, then my son was born. I wanted something that had a rear seat so the 3 of us could go places together in it. As it turns out, the car doesn't have as much room as I'd expected once the child seat is in there - the front seat needs to be slid all the way forward. With 3 passengers I'm the only one who is comfortable so it's time to buy a 4-door.Once I'd decided on a 944, I spent some time looking for the right one. My criteria was something well maintained, original and not modified, with maintenance records. and driven regularly. It took me 3 months to find this car. It is not a show worthy car, although it always gets complements at the cars-n-coffee events as well as most parking lots.
I don't willingly drive the car in the snow, but had 2 instances last winter where I got caught by a snowstorm while at work and had to get home. Both times I was very impressed with this cars ability to handle rough weather. The 50/50 weight balance makes up for any RWD disadvantage.
I normally commute daily with the car, about 20 minutes each way including my stop at daycare. I have taken it on 2 trips to Philadelphia which is about 3.5 hours each way. Some of that in heavy traffic, and some on open highway. In all cases, the car runs smooth and is comfortable on long drives.
Some negatives about the car. These are all things I found easy to live with, so I never looked too deep in to fixing them.
- The car leaks oil. It's so minor that you do not need to top it up between changes, but I want to disclose it.
- The turn signals do not auto-cancel.
- The wipers only have one speed, but it's a speed that works for most situations.
- The passenger fender was parking-lot hit when the previous owner had the car. I looked around for used red fenders but never found anything that looked as nice as the one that's on there. Plus, most people say they don't notice the dent it until I point it out to them, so I've left it on there.
- There are minor rock chips in the paint, mostly in the front, but a few around the car. I've taken photos of some, but consider that a sampling of what you'll find over the car.
- The paint on the bumper and roof is a little faded. I have not tried any products to restore the finish. You may be able to bring it back.
- The dash is cracked around the defrost holes.
- The OEM floormats are not included. I have some universal high quality ones. They're nice, but not an exact fit.
- The roof comes in and out, but it is done manually. I do believe the mechanism on these cars was prone to breaking and most have been converted to manual operation these days.
- The Bridgestone tires have seen better days. They'll get you around, but should be changed.
- The muffler is not stock, but it is in good condition. It has a nice sound to it. Deeper than stock, but not loud or obnoxious.
I have seen new turn/wiper switches for sale on eBay for about $120 that should fix the turn signal and wiper issue. Again, it hasn't bothered me. I replaced the wiper relay and the symptoms didn't change, so I'm quite sure it's the switch. At the recommendation of someone on Rennlist, I kept a DME (fuel pump) relay in my glovebox. This is smart insurance as I ended up using it. I immediately bought another one and placed it in the glovebox. These are fail-prone parts and should always be kept on hand.
I'm happy to deliver this car if you live within 4 hours of zip 20164, or deliver it to a location that reduces your shipping costs. All other arrangements are the responsibility of the buyer.
Personal inspections prior to bidding by you or your mechanic are welcomed. I'm happy to take additional photos by request.
Low starting bid and no reserve.
I'm out of the country for a month starting 9/2/18. I'm happy to work with any buyer around shipping schedules, but the car should be paid for and shipped before that date.
