Background
The Toyota Pickup, known as the Hilux to the rest of the world, is one of the most reliable and indestructible vehicles of all time. If you are a Top Gear UK fan, you know exactly what I am talking about. The EFI Turbo Pickup was arguably the best model in the fourth generation Toyota Pickup line. the legendary 22R four-cylinder engine breathing through a low boost turbocharger, it was Toyota's answer to V6 light truck offerings from Ford and Chevy in the late 1980's. The forced induction does wonders to liven up the 22R at Colorado's high altitudes. It even has a Turbo light in the instrument cluster to let you know when you are in the boost--a feature straight out of the 1980s! Finding a 1980's Toyota 4x4 Truck in good shape is rare; finding a factory Turbo is uber rare.
Summary
This 1986 Toyota EFI Turbo Pickup is an exceptionally clean example that came to Colorado from Casper, Wyoming. The original owner split their time between Wyoming and Lethbridge, Alberta. That said it was clearly spared the winter exposure that rots 1980s Toyota sheet metal from the ground up. No expense was spared in maintaining the truck, including a Toyota Extra Care service plan from purchase. The maintenance log envelope shows regular oil changes and services. At 130,000 miles in 1997 the engine was rebuilt by Dunlop Toyota due to an overheating event. The clutch was also replaced at this time. It came to Colorado in 2015, when it was purchased by a friend who kept it as part of his Japanese car collection, including a Toyota Supra, an FD-generation Mazda RX7, and an Acura NSX. He had the turbo inspected, exhaust manifold replaced, and brought all maintenance up to date including fresh oil, coolant, brake, and driveline fluids, front and rear brakes, and lots more. A complete list is in the mechanical description below. Then he had all typical bed fender rust areas (which was minor on the 1980s Toyota scale) addressed and the entire truck repainted. When he did, he had the turbo badges and tailgate sticker masked instead of removed because they are very difficult to find. The result is one of the cleanest Toyota Turbo Pickups around. It gets thumbs ups and compliments on every drive. Our current inventory ranges from classic BMWs to the JDM Mitsubishi Delica, but the one that I take home every night is this truck because it is simply fantastic. If you are cross shopping this against a later model Tacoma or looking for a beater work truck, you are wasting your time here. We would like to find an owner who knows what this is and will give it a good home.
Exterior
The late 1980's body is the best Toyota Pickup, in my opinion (that said from a Tacoma fanatic). It has none of the soft edges of the 1989 to 1994 generation Truck, or the generations of Tacoma that followed. It is small, yet highly capable--a segment of the truck market that is missing in modern times. Its light yellow exterior color is right out of the 1980's and a similar color to the retro colors found in Toyota's current catalogue. The paint is in excellent condition, having no runs, dust contamination, or excessive orange peel. All body seams are siliconed and look factory correct. The bed has no failed spot welds and the inside has no scratches. All VIN tags from the cab forward are in place. The Carfax is clean, and it has never been in an accident. The undercarriage and frame are free of corrosion, having only superficial surface browning on the suspension components, leaf springs, etc. Under body pictures can also be found on our website. All trim is in place, and factory mud flaps are included with the sale. The optional rear bumper is fitted; both were finished in matte black with the repaint. The windshield is crack-free, and the side and rear window glass are in good condition. The headlight and indicator lenses are crack-free. The 15-inch OEM wheels look great, and are wearing freshly mounted Goodyear Wrangler tires with 90% tread remaining.
Interior
Open the door to this truck and you step back in time. The caramel tan interior is filled with 80's greatness. A thin-rimmed steering wheel sits in front of analogue gauges and a turbo light--a turbo light! The gear shifter and 4x4 shifter are tall and manly (push button 4x4's are for sissies). The sun visor "tall vehicle" rollover and dashboard turbo warm up and cool down placards are missing--likely removed by the original owner or never installed by the dealer. The HVAC is controlled through sliders, not fancy displays. Inside it has everything you need and nothing you don't--except for a cup holder and maybe air conditioning. No, those things are for sissies driving full size luxo-barge trucks! The condition of the interior is excellent. The dashboard is crack-free. A dealer-installed factory carpet kit was installed at purchase, when removed it revealed a perfect rubber floor underneath. The bench seat is in excellent condition except for small cracks in the side vinyl near the recline levers and one burn hole on the driver's seat bottom cushion. It must have been from a joint, because there is no smoke smell whatsoever. The air conditioning button blank is missing, along with the shifter level gear pattern bezel. An early 2000 vintage JVC aftermarket stereo is fitted, it looks and sounds great. The original stereo is also included and I do not know if it is operational. Except for the cigarette lighter, everything inside works exactly as it should, including the window regulator gears (a common issue).
Mechanical
The original Toyota Extra Care service plan certificate is included in the records and its envelope shows regular oil change and full service dates and mileages. The Carfax also shows regular registrations. In 1997 with 130k miles the engine was rebuilt by Dunlop Toyota due to an overheating event, that invoice is also included. It was a comprehensive rebuild including fresh timing components, pistons, rings, and bearings along with a head and valve job, bored cylinders, and a polished crank. The radiator was also rebuilt and the clutch was replaced. Earlier this year the previous owner did a complete maintenance update including:
Turbo Inspected
Replaced Exhaust Manifold
All Accessory Belts
Front and Rear Brake Pads
Front Brake Discs
Front Brake Drums
Brake Fluid Flush
Exhaust Manifold
Fuel Filter
Rebuilt Fuel Injectors
Thermostat
Radiator Cap
Coolant Flush
Shifter Bushings
Front and Rear Differential Fluids
Transfer Case Fluid
Transmission Fluid
Fresh Oil and Filter Change
Battery
The engine starts on command, idles smoothly, and pulls strongly to redline. It does not leak or spot, but the bell housing is a little "fuzzy." The Turbo operates on cue, which is verifiable by the turbo light and seat of the pants feel. Every Toyota Pickup Truck should have come with a turbo; it is noticeable improvement over the stock 22RE motor. The turbo consumes no excessive oil and both the previous owner and myself have always followed proper warm up and cool down procedures. The gearbox shifts super crisp thanks to the shift linkage rebuild, the clutch take up is correct, and there is no excessive driveline noise. The 4WD system engages on command in high and low modes and the hubs lock easily. The suspension is firm and the brakes are strong. Colorado emissions required us to add a catalytic converter even though it passed the "sniffer test" without it. It passes with no issues, and we pay for emissions.
1980s Toyota trucks this clean are few and far between. You can buy one for less that needs rust, paint, and mechanicals addressed, or you can buy this one and simply enjoy it. We would like to find an owner who will appreciate what it is and maintain it for years to come.
