1955 Oldsmobile Eighty-Eight Additional Info:
Two 1955 Oldsmobiles offered as a package. One is an 88, the other is a Super 88 Drag Car. Both are 4 door sedans.
The Super 88 is an ex Drag car that campaigned in the '60's and '70's in the North East, most often at Connecticut Dragway. It ran in the K/Stock Automatic class. A total of 31 NHRA Class Winner stickers adorn the rear side windows along with other vintage stickers and there is faded lettering on both quarter panels that say "New England States Championship 1966".
The former owner had indicated to me that the engine (which turns freely) is bored .060 over, has an Isky Cam, a Mallory Dual Point Distributor and a 3" Carb Spacer but is otherwise stock as NHRA rules required.
He had Headers custom made for it by Tubular Automotive in MA and they've seen better days but there's enough left of them to make copying them possible.
It's got Traction Master Traction Bars, a "Getz Gear" Ring and Pinion gear set in the rear end, Tow Tabs and a HYDRO-MOTIVE Racing Hydramatic Transmission, which, I believe is Reverse Valve Body.
As I understand it, the car was stored inside for 30 years and outside for ten. The body is straight and is mildly rusted out in a few areas but nothing major. The interior is rough. The Engine and Trans are Currently out of the car.
The 88 was purchased in Lincoln NE and was intended to be the parts car for the Super 88. Better body panels with less rust, better chrome, good door panels and it runs and moves. There are no brakes (but the radio works!)....and then I noticed that it had a trailer hitch....and I thought "How cool would it be to paint them both the same and use the 88 as the tow vehicle!" So, I bought a vintage NMW tow bar and that became the plan....except life got in the way and that's as far as I got. Now, unfortunately, they have to go.
I'm hoping somebody out there shares my vision to Tow and Show this pair and will do something great with them or even just restore the race car. After all, it did make history 16 seconds at a time!
For those of you that have asked:
The engine is complete from oil pan to carburetor. It was disassembled to inspect the cylinder walls. I have not dropped the pan but it feels good spinning it over by hand.
I have the radiator.
I do not know the rear axle gear ratio.
I found one time slip stuck in the front seat, that's how I know it turned 16's.
No power steering or brakes on either car.
I have all keys for both cars.
Super 88 has an old registration and Bill of Sale, the 88 has a title. There should be no problem registering either one.
