1965 Oldsmobile Cutlass Additional Info:
This sale is for a 1965 Olds Cutlass rare two door post, buckets and column shift. California Black plate car. The car runs and drives and all systems are operational. Drive as is. Fix or take to a higher level. Take it bracket racing. Possibilities are endless.
Get ready for a lengthy description. As most know I have had cancer and have decided to sell off my car collection. I started last October and still have quite a way to go.
I purchased this car from a super nice guy from California who was part of the Silicone Valley computer era in the 1990's. He wanted was a car he missed the chance to get when he was young. a 1965 Cutlass. He lived this project for a good several years. Being a former computer engineer he studied every publication and did his research. A regular Dr. Olds. I have a hand written note book (see pics below) that he made notes on everything he did pertaining to the car. Very interesting read. I also have a zip drive he sent me with info and you get that as well.
The motor is a 1969 Olds Toronado 455. It is completely overhauled .030 overbore. Note the pic of the oil pressure at start up at idle. Stock Toro cast intake he maintains flows the best and is superior over an aluminum intake. Olds 442 cast exhaust headers. New carb, Not sure on the specs of the cam as I haven't opened the zip drive but it has a nice NON stock idle.
Trans is a new Turbo 400. The rear end is a 10 bolt Olds that was overhauled and has a positraction unit. Big sway bar under the rear. New rear springs, brake lines exhaust. Electric fans, trunk mounted battery. He bought and installed a new windshield. He custom ordered the 15" steel wheels and I believe are 8" wide rolling on BFG Comp T/A tires. Has a battery push disconnect. The car has been completely rewired and even the radio works. Horn and lights work.
His intent was to build this car then find a better body and transfer everything over. He turned 70 years old and with all the fire he had during the project abruptly stopped. When he was done he was done.
All sounds great so far but this car has rust issues. Thegentleman believed that the body was not repairable (or worth repairing) Those Cali guys are spoiled! It does have rust issues for sure that are not typical in Ohio. Vehicles in Ohio when not preserved rust from the bottom up and are the worst to repair.
The Olds is the opposite from that and has rusted from the top down. The worst hit panels are the hood and trunk lid. Once these are replaced everything else doesn't look to bad. Other areas are the windshield and maybe around the rear glass. It cannot be determined the extent due to the glass being glued in place. I didn't want to remove it as the car has to sit outside. There isvisiblerust near the roof rail (drip edge or rain gutter) and is common on all Cutlasses. The doorbottoms and where the battery is mounted. May be more here and there. The quarters and frame and underside looks good. The front pans have been replaced with correct panels and have been screwed in place. The firewall is good. The quarters are good.
I have a 67 GTO windshield channel I will throw in but you or someone you elect will have to cut it out.
To sum it up. You are buying a car that needs a lot of body work and or a restoration OR both. A parts car with a hot 455 motor, rebuilt transmission and rebuilt posi rear end. These three items minus the body are expensive to replace. The previous owner stated he had nearly $15,000 in the car. I am starting this auction at $1.00 and no reserve.
This is a vintage project car. Please use common sense when purchasing. Although a lot of money has been thrown at it I would recommend hauling or transporting it. Get it home and inspect and go over it. Drive it local until you feel comfortable.
