1979 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class SL Additional Info:
The 450SLs were built to last and the quality still shows today. This car only has 55k original miles and has a rare navy blue exterior with a white interior - perfect to ride with the top down.
This 8-cylinder car makes a perfect, ready-to-drive spring/summer cruiser for those trips upstate or to the Hamptons.
The car is in very good condition and has been garaged (upper Manhattan), and hardly driven. Also, it was recently featured on Bring a Trailer: bringatrailer.com/2016/06/24/blue-over-cream-1979-mercedes-benz-450sl/
On the outside, the body is in fantastic shape. The paint presents itself very well on all panels including the OEM hardtop. Panels are also straight with consistent gapping. The convertible top is in excellent shape as well. Soft top is in good condition, and the car even comes with the original tools for releasing the OEM hardtop.
The inside of the car is in excellent shape. Original components are still in great condition. Typically, the A/C mechanism fails on these cars, but this one works well and will require a freon recharge to cool properly. Overall, everything is in very original good condition. The beautiful white interior is extremely comfortable, clean and desirable among collectors.
Mechanically, the car is sound and has a clean bill of health from a recent visit to the mechanic. In neutral, the idle is high - We think the engine may need to be tuned. In gear, the car idles perfectly. Suspension and undercarriage are pristine. Please look closely at the photos. The tires on the original wheels have nearly 90% tread without any dry rot. Spare wheel, as far as we can tell, has never been used. The 4.5 liter V8 starts easily and drives great.
Given normal wear and tear after 35 years of use, in 2011, the current owner replaced the following parts in the vehicle to make it fully road-worthy: the power steering pump, front shocks, shift link bushings, rear hand brake cable, rear sway bar links, roof locking handles, motor mounts, rear brake pads and tune up of motor. Just last month, a new Bosch fuel pump and battery were installed.
There are a few things to note: The fuel gauge is stuck and should be easy to fix, there is some paint brittling on the passenger side door jam and under the hood near the headlights. And the bolster support on the driver side and dashboard corners show a little wear.
