Similar to the Mercedes 230SL, changes to the 250SL included a 6-mm stroke increase, a switch from four to seven main bearings and rear disc brakes, improved seatbelts and a collapsible steering wheel.

Horsepower stayed the same, but torque increased by nearly 15 lbs-ft.Resiliency also improved with a new cooling water tank ("round top") with increased capacity from 10.8L (2.9USgal) to 12.9L (3.4USgal), and a standard oil-water heat exchanger.

The wider power band of the 250 SL resulted in noticeably improved performance, as the 230 SL engines rarely produced more than 143PS (105kW; 141hp) in practice.
