Starting from a straight, rust free and low mileage original vehicle, we stripped it and refinished the bodywork (inside and out) in Tobacco Brown, a vintage Mercedes-Benz color from the 1970’s. We removed the black vinyl on the C-pillars and painted them body color, shaved the door mirrors in favor of early-style fender mounted units, and shortened the front and rear bumpers as a nod to the earlier “suffix” examples. With the factory 3-spoke alloy wheels in black and the factory optional “four lamp” front grille with integrated driving lights, the result is a mix of old and new that has tremendous curb appeal.
Inside, the original seats have been recovered in a vintage 2-tone combination of Racing Green and Sage, with the centers in diamond-quilted alcantara. Door panels have been recovered to match and our bespoke center console is in place of the rather fragile original, with the cubby box lid recovered to match the seats. New hand cut carpeting has been installed throughout, including the rear cargo compartment, and a new headliner has been fitted.
Underneath, the chassis is as straight and rust free as you will find, with no damage or signs of serious off roading. This has been a well-kept and much loved vehicle from new, and shows it, front to back, top to bottom. Air conditioning blows cold, and everything looks and feels as it should.
The lusty and trusty 2.5L turbo diesel fires immediately, with just momentary warming of the glow plugs necessary, and idles smoothly and quietly with no smoke or undue clatter. Flexible and smooth, with a broad swell of torque available in the midrange, it accelerates effortlessly with traffic and will happily cruise at modern highway speeds for as long as you care to do so. The low original miles means outstanding cylinder compression, great throttle response and extraordinary efficiency, allowing the RRC to run all day long, in any weather, on any type of road. Or on no roads at all.
The gearchange is light and direct up and down, with no hesitation or balkiness, and the steering is precise with outstanding feedback. The clutch takes up at the correct height and bites with firm authority during engagement, and the brakes are strong as sure with no noise, vibration, or pulling. The factory power steering is light and confidence inspiring, and whether you are on tarmac or well and truly off it, the operation is easy, composed, and eminently capable.
All lights, gauges, switches and other electrics work as intended. It's arguably the best all-around 4x4 of all time, the Range Rover Classic, and this example is particularly strong, particularly fresh, and does everything exactly as it should. Take it anywhere - from a downtown dinner to the tops of the Atlas Mountains - and it will operate with all the tyle and composure that has made the Range Rover name famous.
