1930 Ford Model A Deluxe Cabriolet
A Cabriolet is distinguished from a Roadster by the inclusion (on the Cabriolet) of glass windows that roll up and down. The Cabriolet is less sporty and considered more luxurious because of its ability to keep the passengers out of the bad weather. It was a more expensive car as well.
This original 1930 Ford Model A Cabriolet was the beneficiary of an older restoration. A few faults, a nice color combination and a converted to a 12-volt electrical system.
Exterior
Tan paint adorns most of the body, save for a brown pinstriped belting running through the center of the car. Also, brown fenders connected by a running board and brown rocker panel above are seen. Even a metal spare tire covering also in brown is nestled within the driver's side front fender. Butterscotch metal wire spoked wheels are on all four corners. Paint presents with some chipping and buckling and flaking off, as well as underlying rust. A rear luggage rack, in use holding a large trunk, filled with extras for the car (boot cover, car cover, various spare parts, a few tools, and a tire iron) is strapped together and held on to oak lath and chrome frame. Dual taillights and dual curved bumpers are hanging below the lights and framing the trunk. Running board step plates, and a chromed radiator surround is topped with a Ford badged Moto Meter radiator cap. All chrome has some areas of nice shine, and other areas of dulling, pitting and rusting. Windshield glass is beginning to de laminate. The folding canvas top is in good condition and sports landau bars on either side.
Interior
A comfortable black textured vinyl grabs you into the single bench seat and allows for the driver and passenger the sit close and spoon while driving (not recommended!) A swooping upper dash with a tan background and brown eyebrow panels floats above a tan metal dash inserted below. This part has a few drop marks and some paint rub off in 2 areas. It also houses the Ford "mask style" instrument cluster in chrome, which is slightly rusted. Rubber flooring is present and in black, and handbrake are present, along with the original steering wheel with a few cracks. A spark advance lever and throttle lever are present and accounted for.
Drivetrain
A 201ci 4-cylinder one-barrel carb engine, produces 40hp, and is connected to a 3-speed manual transmission. 3.77 gears on the rear puts the power to the pavement.
Undercarriage
Underside viewing of this car shows nice black painted surfaces with no real rust damage, and structurally strong. Transverse leaf spring for front and rear round out the suspension as well as mechanical drum brakes all around.
Drive-Ability
We were excited to drive this piece of history around the hallowed grounds of the Classic Auto Mall. Sadly, the engine would only crank but would not fire. Mayhap the points need a filing and to be regapped or a tune up is in full order. Our consignor states that the car runs well so something simple is most likely amiss.
Harken back to 1930 and pretend you had some extra money to spend, needed an automobile and be able to drive it year-round. The Ford Cabriolet would cost you a little more, but it would fit the bill. Beautiful exterior color combination takes you back to a time when you thought everything in the auto world was painted black. The exterior paint will need some extra TLC if you would like or drive it with the nice patina it has on it right now.
