1966 Ford Galaxie 500 Convertible
Reading the 1966 Ford sales brochure it states that "quiet speaks for quality." Smooth, soft, gently controlled, marvelously quiet. A new feature for 1966 is the "automatic speed control" or commonly known as cruise control. The Galaxie was a sleeper because it needed a big engine to move the car due to its size and weight. But the engine was large enough not only to move the car smoothly, but really fast. Looks like a family car, performs like a muscle car, although the term had not been invented in 1966...but they were working on it.
A mostly original car, this 66 Galaxie 500 with a new engine inserted, is a performer on many levels. Level 1 beautiful design with its stacked dual headlights. Level 2 with its muscle car-esque power. And level 3 with its nice interior covered by a convertible. Going up!
Exterior
1st level... dual headlights vertically oriented flank a horizontal ribbed grille and original bumper all in good shiny condition. Nice straight steel slab sides covered in Nightmist Blue Poly are rimmed with trim in the form of chrome wheel surround brite-work and a wide chrome rocker trim bar. On the rear quarter is the Galaxie badging, and if we turn the corner, we see the square taillights with star like trim inside them. Below this is a pristine rear bumper which is original to this car. The black canvas convertible top with plastic rear window, which is clear, is power actuated and goes up and down flawlessly. 15-inch wheels with Ford wheel covers are on all 4 corners. These are wrapped with thin whites. Going up!
Interior
Up to Level 3 ...An amalgamation of light blue vinyl with a textured tuck and roll interior panel, and smooth bolsters is seen on the front split bench and rear bench. A dark blue trim strip with floral embossing runs through the middle of the backs on all the seats. These also are framed nicely with dark blue piping. All very textural and a great design detail, worked out from 1966. The dash is extremely clean with dark blue padded vinyl, black instrument cluster, horizontal panels with wood appliqu, and ribbed aluminum. All original and all very nicely presenting to the world. Oh! and the clock works! Going down...
Drivetrain
Level 2.... A 390ci truck block V8 totally rebuilt sits proudly in a clean engine bay. If you like Ford blue you'll love the look of this mill with its deep blue block, air cleaner housing, and valve covers. Supple and shiny rubber, new radiator, are a visual feast for the Ford aficionado. A single 4-barrel carb feeds the mill fossils and air and a 3-speed Cruise-O-Matic automatic transmission is bolted on the back, as well as a Ford 9-inch 4.10 geared rear. Going down...
Undercarriage
The basement...or undercarriage, shows strong and rust-free rustproofed underpinnings, shiny exhaust and drip free oil pan and transmission. Frame is black with no rust. Suspension is independent coil spring suspension up front and coil springs on the rear, all shined up and rust free. Drum brakes are all around, and an H pattern exhaust with Turbo mufflers, snakes its way rearward past the pristine metal.
Drive-Ability
As we hop off the lift, and into this car we are in original interior bliss. Just beautifully done and comfortable. Turn the key and we are lit and ready to pull down on the dainty 60's design shifter. This car cruises nicely, turns well and easy steering, has good acceleration, and was a nice ride with the top down.
Mostly original, a new truck block, beautiful blue engine accents, pristine engine bay, undercarriage, and overall nice paint. A survivor if you will nicely taken care of since its mild restoration. Put on your bandanna to keep that beehive from flopping in the wind and we'll go for a spin...thanks Henry, even though your company has had its ups and downs.
