Car is in low #2 / high #3 condition with a refurbishment taking place from 2009-2012. My husband, the original owner, bought the car new on January 9, 1969 from Rice & Holman Ford in Pennsauken, New Jersey. Due to his failing health, it's time to sell the car.A photocopy of the sales invoice comes with the car.
This was my husband's daily driver for the first few years. I know he drove it from New Jersey to California to attend the Defense Language Institute for a year around 1976. He drove it back to New Jersey and put it in his mother's garage in 1977, and by that point he was living and working in New York City and had the use of a car through his work whenever he needed it during the week, so he only drove the Mustang sporadically on weekends when he'd make it out to New Jersey. The car sat un-driven from 1980 - 1986 while my husband was working in London, and he bought a Fiat while he was abroad, which he used as his daily driver when he returned, so the Mustang never again was his regular car. My husband moved to California in 1989 but left the Mustang in his mother's garage in New Jersey until August 2009 when we had the car sent down to a friend's in Alabama to get the car refurbished and refreshed. In February of 2012 he was done refreshing the car and we had it shipped out to us in California. Since the car arrived here, my husband has put 302 miles on it.
The car is basically bone-stock with a few exceptions. The voltage regulator is an aftermarket solid-state replacement, the ignition points have been replaced with a Pertronix system, the coil is the matched Pertronix coil. Upholstery, carpet, and door panels are original, the dash pad has been replaced. The car was painted the original colors in 2011, though the black on the hood is more of a semi-gloss than the flat that it was originally. The engine has never been apart, the transmission was rebuilt in 2009 because the front seal was leaking (the rebuilder initially thought the car had 155000 miles on it when he checked it in as some paperwork states, but the transmission looked new inside, giving further support to the 55,811 indicated miles. Other various wear parts replaced as necessary, extensive list of work during the refurbishment can be provided.
Entire exterior repainted in 2011, small amounts of lower quarter panel rust cut out and patched, all surface rust and cancer removed. Front valance replaced due to lower lip rust.
The car has essentially been stored for the past 7 years, so certain safety items like brakes and tires should be gone through and replaced as well as items that age based on time before putting any miles on the car. The carburetor could use a rebuild just from sitting so long as the accelerator pump appear faulty. The oil pressure gauge appears inoperative, though the mechanic who refurbished the car checked the oil pressure during the refurbishment and confirmed the engine was producing pressure. We have not driven the car at any appreciable speed in the past three years, so it's possible the gauge just reads low and would indicate pressure if the engine speed were raised. The heater core was leaking and is currently bypassed. The headliner will need to be replaced, it has tears at the stitching of one of the bow lines as shown in pictures below. The windshield shows a score mark from a bad wiper blade, which we've tried to show in pictures. The rear leaf springs show some overspray from when the car was painted. The heads of the fender-attaching screws were painted body color by mistake. The hood is painted a semi-gloss black rather than the flat black it should be. Radiator is an aftermarket replacement. While most weatherstripping was replaced during refurbishment, there are a few pieces that show some age, some chrome shows some minor pitting.
No rust currently present, all rust that was found was repaired during refurbishment 2009-2012, car has been garaged in California since then and has only seen 300 miles of driving since then, all but 37 of those miles more than 4 years ago.
Records from the refurbishment are extensive, we have parts lists, service records, and shipping records showing condition before and after. So far we've only found a few records from before the car was sent to Alabama, but we will keep digging.
The car was last serviced in December 2015 at 55,774 miles, at which point the heater core was bypassed, the Pertronix ignition was installed, and the carburetor was blown out. Of the 37 miles put on the car since then, 20 of those were driving the car back home from the repair shop in 2015.
Based on the condition of the pedals, the fact that the drivers door doesn't sag, the (lack of) wear on the upholstery, the fact that the car has essentially been off the road since 1980, and the transmission rebuilder's statements that the transmission looked new inside, we believe the approximately 55,800 miles to be accurate. It could, however, be 155,800, andunfortunately due to my husband's failing health, it's impossible to know for sure.
We welcome and encourage you to inspect the car in-person before bidding. Car is on non-op with up-to-date California registration, storage insurance.
