1966 Ford Mustang Convertible
Local owner for the past 16 years C-code Mustang 289 CID Windsor V-8 engine Three-speed Cruise-O-Matic FX automatic transmission (code 7) with 3.00:1 gearing (code 1) Candyapple Red exterior (code T) with white power-folding top and red tonneau cover Red vinyl interior with black instrument panel Power steering and power top Documentation includes original owner’s manual other, assorted receipts and invoicesWe absolutely love the first generation Mustangs here at Motoexotica and this one is classic and correct to it’s very red core! MotoeXotica Classic Cars is pleased to offer this 1966 Ford Mustang Convertible that we are selling for a close friend who has owned this sweet Mustang for the past 16 years.
Built on March 12, 1966 at Ford’s Dearborn, Michigan assembly plant, this classic pony droptop is finished in Candyapple Red (code T) with a white, power-folding top and red tonneau cover. It was originally shipped to the Richmond, Virginia area. The paint is overall excellent condition while the glass panels are intact and in very good condition. The car’s lights are in one piece and haze-free and look great.
All of the car’s body panels are in great shape, solid and straight, including the white roof, which is in good condition and has no tears or rips. The engine bay is quite tidy and the battery appears new.
This pony rolls on Firestone Affinity whitewall radials surrounding factory wheel covers. Beneath that red hood is a 289 CID Windsor V-8 (code C) mated to a Cruise-O-Matic FX three-speed automatic transmission (code 7) and 3.00:1 rear end (code 1). Power convenience features include power steering and power top. Please note that the power top functions but needs some assistance by hand while operating.
Inside, the red interior is eye-catching. The front bucket and rear vinyl seats are in very good overall condition, as is the matching carpet. The black, padded instrument panel presents some contrast to the red and is also in very good overall shape and crack-free. The original, three-spoke steering wheel is present and looks great. The inner door panels are still red though there is some sun fade evident on the rear side panels, a sure sign this car has been enjoyed with the top down on more than one occasion! The rear and sideview mirrors are all in very good order while the shift lever looks good. Completing the interior is a factory AM/FM radio with eight-track player.
The 1966 Mustang debuted with moderate trim changes including a new grille, side ornamentation, wheel covers and gas cap. A large number of new paint and interior color options, an AM/eight-track sound system, and one of the first AM/FM mono automobile radios were also offered. It also removed the Falcon instrument cluster; the previously optional features, including the round gauges and padded sun visors, became standard equipment. The Mustang would be the best-selling convertible in 1966, with 72,119 sold, beating the number two Chevrolet Impala by almost two to one. Total Mustang sales accounted for seven percent of all American car sales in 1966 and it was the third best-selling nameplate in America; quite a feat for moniker just three model years old at that point.
This was the first year of federally mandated safety standards. All 1966 Fords had front and rear seat belts, a padded instrument panel, emergency flashers, electric windshield wipers and windshield washers as standard equipment.
The 1965 and 1966 Mustangs are differentiated by variations in the exterior, despite similar design. These variations include the emblem on the quarter-panels behind the doors. From August 1964 production, the emblem was a single vertical piece of chrome, while for 1966 models the emblem was smaller in height and had three horizontal bars extending from the design, resembling an “E.” The front intake grilles and ornaments were also different. The 1965 front grille used a “honeycomb” pattern, while the 1966 version was a “slotted” style. While both model years used the “Horse and Corral” emblem on the grille, the 1965 had four bars extending from each side of the corral, while on the 1966, these bars were removed.
Competition to this Mustang in 1966 included Chevrolet’s Corvair Monza and Chevy II convertibles, Dodge’s Dart 270 Convertible and Ford’s own Falcon Convertible.
Documentation includes original owner’s manual other, assorted receipts and invoices.
