1960 Cadillac Fleetwood Sixty Special Additional Info:
Did someone say tail fins? You'll most likely be the only one on the block, or maybe even your state, with one of these sleek, low and long examples of Harley Earl's greatest design work. I inherited this '60 Caddy recently, but, sadly, don't have the funds or skills to properly restore it. My grandfather originally purchased this beast for my uncle to drive to high school in the early 70s. Of course, he made the front page of the school newspaper with his unique, head-turning car. It is definitely a rocket ship right out of the space age.
I work for a school system and asked the instructors and students of our auto body and auto mechanic programs if they would like to check the Caddy out to see if it could be fixed up enough for me to drive around town or in parades with students. At first glance, it really didn't appear to need much work. The paint is still pretty nice and there is little exterior rust. The instructors told me it is actually a fairly solid car, but really needs a frame-off restoration to address some underbody rust. They say it's engine also needs to be rebuilt, which would take a little more time than they could commit and a little more money than I have to spend.
The instructors did tell me this car could also make a fine donor car for someone who is looking for many nice parts for their own restoration. Almost everything is there and in pretty good shape. They were especially impressed by the chrome trim, windows and interior and how well they have all been preserved, even though the car sat idle for so many years.
I am very sad to see the '60 Caddy go, but hopefully there is someone out there who can breathe new life into this classic car and can have it cruising along the city streets in fantastic style once again.
