1972 BMW 2002 4 speed and Sunroof - Great Runner with 64K miles
Up for auction is my 1972 BMW 2002 with manual transmission (4 speed) and equipped with a rare factory sunroof. This early car has the desirable round tail lights (commonly referred to as a “Roundie” ) and small chrome bumpers. It has 62,984K miles (maybe 162K?) and drives incredibly well. It’s a matching numbers car with its original engine and gearbox. Vin number is 2584693. The car comes with its original tool roll and owners manual. The car was stored for 18 years from 1997 - 2016 at which time I rescued it from a barn in West Virginia.
Overall Condition: The car is currently registered in New York State, passed its annual New York State safety inspection and garaged in Huntington, New York. The car starts right up and runs strong all day long and drives like a dream. It is very smooth with great acceleration and good brakes. I can literally drive this car anywhere and feel that it is dependable for a long haul. Great car to restore or drive as is....
Mechanicals: The 2002 runs and drives great. It handles great with the 15 inch BBS wheels and Yokahoma tires. That makes all the difference. I also have a set of MOMO 13 inch wheels that go with the car. You turn the key and the engine fires right up. It runs very strong and does not smoke or have any oil leaks. Engine idles around 800 rpms. Engine acceleration is smooth and sounds great. Full recent tune up was completed by “The Little Garage “who specializes in BMW 2002’s including, new fuel pump, stainless steel exhaust from the header down, spark plugs, distributer cap, rotor, condenser, water pump, shift bushings and valve adjustment. Engine runs smooth and the car shifts good and has good brakes.
The gearbox is the factory original 4 speed unit and all four gears and reverse work perfect without any noises or clunks. Shocks, steering, suspension and brakes are all in very good working order needing nothing. Clutch feels perfect.
Mechanically, it runs great and can run all day and on long trips. It’s reliable and basically a daily driver.
The following are NEW parts:
Stainless steel exhaust system from header to muffler (from Germany)
New 15inch BBS wheels with Yokahoma tires (195x50x15)
Vintage 1970’s Lecarrera steering wheel (I retained the original wheel)
New Fuel Pump
New fuel lines and oil filters
New Radiator hoses and clamps and thermostat
New water pump, and fan belt
Completely Rebuilt Stick Shift with all new bushings
New plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor, points, condenser
Body: The car was painted sometime in the early eighties Blue over its original white color. The body is solid with some minor rust, dents etc etc. The door jams are rust free, floors are solid and in good condition, outer sills, wheel wells are all in good condition. Door close nicely and windows roll up to the top!. Glass is in good condition; rubber needs replacing. Rear shock towers are solid and the wheel arches have been replaced. The car needs some body work as seen and needs paint. Although this look is in right now.
Interior: The dash is 100% original with working gauges, button and knobs. Seats and door panels are original !!!. It is a rare sight to see the original seats with head rests in these 2002’s. Needs headliner and carpet. Floors are solid.
The car is sold “AS IS” with no expressed or implied warrantee or guarantees. I am not a broker or a dealer so this is a private sale that is final. It is sold “WHERE IS” in Huntington, New York and if transported will be the cost of the buyer.
I have set a reasonable reserve on the car. Hagerty Insurance Co has valued my 2002 $15,000. Good 2002’s are getting harder to find in unrestored condition like this car and are getting very sought after by collectors and car enthusiasts.
If you are a serious buyer and have any questions please contact meat 631-339-3349 orthrough E-Bay email by asking a question. I will sell to Europe/ worldwide or to anyone who appreciates this car for what it is. I have the right to end this auction early since I will advertise on other venues. I will request a $500 deposit within 48 hours and the balance shortly thereafter and will hold the car for you until payment and transportation has been made. Thanks for your interest. Dave.
