THIS 1960 WILLYS TRUCK HAS UNDERGONE AN ENGINE TRANSPLANT AT SOME POINT, ALONG WITH VARIOUS SUSPENSION MODIFICATIONS. AS IT SITS, IT IS POWERED BY A SMALL BLOCK CHEVY .... POSSIBLY A 305 CUBIC INCH V-8. THIS ENGINE IS MATED TO THE STANDARD 3 SPEED PLUS REVERSE TRANSMISSION. IT IS A 4 WHEEL DRIVE VEHICLE.
THE ENGINES RUNS VERY WELL AND HAS NO ISSUES. CARBURATION IS BY WAY OF AN EDELBROCK 4 BARREL. I ADDED A PUSH FAN THAT RUNS BY A SWITCH IN THE CAB FOR USE ON HOT DAYS IN SLOW MOVING TRAFFIC. I HAVEN'T HAD IT ON THE HIGHWAY MUCH, AS IT HASTHE STOCK LOWAXLE GEARS. THE BIG TIRES HELP MAINTAIN A DECENT SPEED WITHOUT TAXING THE ENGINE.MY PLAN WAS TO ADD A MULTI-CORE RADIATOR, SINCE I THINK THE CURRENT ONE IS TOO SMALL.IT HAS ANEW CUSTOM EXHAUST THAT EXITS JUST BEFORE THE REAR TIRES. TIRES ON THIS BEAST ARE 35X12.50X15'S WITH AN OFF ROAD PATTERN. THEY ARE OLD AND HAVE SOME DAMAGE AND WEAR BUT MATCH THE LOOK OF THE VEHICLE NICELY... AND THEY ALL HOLD AIR PRESSURE WITHOUT LOSS.THE BRAKES ARE MANUAL DRUMS AND STOP THE WILLYS JUST FINE ... NICE AND STRAIGHT WITH MODERATE EFFORT ON THE PEDAL. POWER STEERING MAKES TURNING A LOT EASIER ( I AM UNSURE WHO'S MANUFACTURE THE STEERING GEAR IS). REAR LEAF SPRINGS HAVE BEEN MOVED ABOVE THE REAR AXLE TO HELP WITH FENDER CLEARANCE.
THE BODY AND FRAME ON THIS LITTLE TRUCK ARE VERY NICE. IT APPEARS THIS WILLYS SPENT A LOT OF TIME ON THE WEST COAST (PREVIOUS VEHICLE REGISTRATIONS IN THE GLOVE BOX COMFIRM THIS). I BOUGHT IT FROM A GUY IN UTAH. IT HAS AN AMERICANATHEME THROUGHOUT THE VEHICLE. A VARIANCE OF THE AMERICAN FLAG IS PAINTED ON THE DOORS, AND A POPULAR SLOGAN UNDER THE REAR WINDOW.MAGNETIC PANELS ARE INCLUDED IF YOU WANT TO COVER THE FLAGS FOR USE AT SPECIAL OCCASSIONS.THE SIDE WINDOW AND LEFT SIDE WINDSHIELD HAVE CRACKS IN THEM, BUT AGAIN, I THOUGHT THESE ISSUES, AND ALSO ANY OTHER VISUAL DEFECTS, BLENDED NICELY WITH THE OVERALL APPEARANCE OF THIS OLD WILLYS TRUCK. THE BED IS IN GREAT CONDITION, AND I HAVE USED IT TO HAUL A BIG OLD HARLEY DRESSER WITH NO PROBLEM. I ADDED A STEP TO THE REAR FRAME SECTION TO HELP GET IN AND OUT OF THE BED. THE HOOK IS PURELY DECORATIVE, BUT COULD BE FUNCTIONAL WITH THE ADDITION OF 2 SIDE SUPPORTS.
I WORKED ON THE INTERIOR OF THIS TRUCK SOON AFTER I BOUGHT IT. I HAD PLANS ON FINISHING IT, BUT HAVE DECIDED TO LET IT GO AS I HAVE OTHER VEHICLES THAT NEED MY ATTENTION. IT HAS A CEILING MOUNTED COOLING/VENTILATION FAN THAT IS WIRED TO THE SAME SWITCH THAT OPERATES THE DOME LIGHT. IT'S CONFIGURATION AS TO HOW IT FUNCTIONS IS UNIQUE. IT HAS A SMALL STEERING WHEEL (12" MAYBE) WITH FOAM GRIPS. I HAD THE SAME WHEELON MY OLD 1965 CHEVY VAN BACK IN THE 70'S. THE CENTER CAP ON THE WHEEL IS A HARLEY GAS CAP. THE ACTUAL HORN BUTTON IS ON THE DASH. IT IS WIRED UPFOR A FLAME THROWER DEVICE, BUT IS NON FUNCTIONAL. I WILL LEAVE THE FINISHING TOUCHES UP TO THE NEW OWNER, IF DESIRED. IT WILL NOT FUNCTION WITHOUT FURTHER FABRICATION. THE SPOT LIGHT IS FROM ONE OF MY CHOPPERS, AND WORKS PERFECTLY. MY COMPANY LOGO IS ON THE PASSENGER SIDE, NEAR THE MIRROR. IT IS ACTUALLY A HARLEY POINTS COVER MADE FROM ALUMINUM. THE HOOD ORNAMENT IS FROM A 1949 CADDY.THE HORN IS FROM A HARLEY SHOVELHEAD. I ADDED A MODERN SOUND SYSTEM BETWEEN THEBUCKET SEATS. IT'S ALL SELF CONTAINED. THE RADIO UNIT HAS BLUETOOTH CAPABILITY AND A WIRELESS REMOTE. IT SOUNDS GREAT!I BELIEVE ALL THE GAUGES WORK PROPERLY, ALTHOUGH THE OIL PRESSURE GAUGE READS LOW (IT HAS A LINE FEED THAT I THINK IS LEAKING A BIT). THE SPEEDOMETER SEEMS ACCURATE ACCORDING TO THEGPS ON MY PHONE. A WELDING BLACKET COVERS THE HOLE IN THE FIREWALL WHICH PREVIOUS OWNERS CUT TO FIT THE ENGINE. I WOULD HAVE APPROACHED IT DIFFERENTLEY ... PERHAPS WITH A AMC 327 OR FORD SMALL BLOCK.
THIS TRUCK RIDES GREAT AND GOES DOWN THE ROAD NICE AND STRAIGHT, DESPITE THE MODIFIED SUSPENSION AND TIRE CONFIGURATION. IT BREAKS NICE AND STRAIGHT TOO, WITH NO FIGHTING AT THE LITTLE HOT ROD STEERING WHEEL. ALL IN ALL, A NICE RIDING TRUCK THAT SOMEONE SPENT A LOT OF TIME GETTING TO THIS POINT. IT DOES HAVE A COUPLE OF SMALL LEAKS BUT NOTHING THAT I REALLY WORRIED ABOUT (AGAIN, ONE MAY BE FROM THE OIL PRESSURE GAUGE FEED LINE). THE WIPERS ARE VACUUM AND BARELY MOVE WHEN OPERATING THE SWITCH. I TESTED THE MOTOR OUT OF THE VEHICLE AND IT WORKS AS IT SHOULD. THE WIPER TRANSMISSION MAY NEED LUBRICATION OR ADJUSTMENT. ALL THE PULLEYS AND CABELS ARE IN PLACE BEHIND THE DASH. ALL THE EXTERIOR LIGHTS, DIRECTIONALS, AND DASH LIGHTS ILLUMINATE LIKE THEY SHOULD. ONE OF THE MINI GAUGES IS MISSING A BULB (VOLT METER I THINK).
