1970 Volvo 142 S Additional Info:
PLEASE READ THIS FIRST: This vehicle is being relisted due to a dishonest seller. Its a good car with a great history, but I'm tainted from the experience so I'm selling it for a loss, and I will represent the car accurately for the next buyer. Below are some brief bullet points about the car and a link to 100 photos, any serious buyers can contact me and I would be happy to elaborate on anything...
The Basics:
- 1970 Volvo 142S 4-Speed in its original Safari Yellow color
- Original B20 engine with dual Stromberg carburetors ("S")
- Factory 4-wheel power disc brakes and 3-point seat belts- Factory double undercoating treatment when new - One owner Alabama car for the first 43 years - Meticulous oil changes and service for half a century
- 205k original miles (looks/runs/drives/feels like 100k miles)
- 99% rust free body and 90% rust free undercarriage
The Records:
- Amazing service records kept for 50 years with the original window sticker
- Original owner logged everything for 43 years (see photo gallery for a peek)
- Second owner continued tradition and kept all service records for next 5 years
Key Repairs:
- Original owner changed oil every 3000 miles and recorded every repair
- Second owner spent $4,000 going through car mechanically from 2013 to 2016
- Work included major brake overhaul, engine work, NOS parts, and more
- Engine head was machined, received all new valves, new head gasket, etc
- Tech who did engine work said he never saw old engine that clean internally
- Engine oil looks like you just poured it in even after 500 miles of driving
- Original clutch was replaced at 162k miles
- Engine rear main seal was replaced in 2019
- Four new tires and new battery in 2020
The Good:
- Engine runs good cold and hot, no smoke, no issues, choke on dash works
- Transmission and clutch both operate great, no issues, no grind, not sloppy
- Drives tight, not a rattle trap, feels like a 100k mile car, not a 200k mile car
- Everything works on the car, even all the dash lights and indicators
- Interior is mostly original and in very good condition throughout- Original rubber floor lining, carpet, and floor mats
- Rare optional center console is in excellent condition
- Era correct Becker Europa II stereo (they sell for $400 to $600)
- NOS seat covers (fronts & rear bottom) were installed two years ago
- NOS exterior mirrors, dew wipes, and trunk seal installed five years ago- Mostly rust free body and undercarriage with only a few isolated rust spots- Front windshield is PPG replacement and in excellent condition
The Not-so-Good:
- Air conditioning compressor removed at some point (other components there)
- Right front fender, grill, and front bumper replaced in 1991 due to fender bender
- Exterior also repainted in 1991 and was Maaco quality (rate condition 6 out of 10)
- Paint is 30 years old and has various dings, nicks, chips, scratches, touch ups, etc
- Two metal patches in rear floor boards about 25 years ago (prone area)
- Two small amateur patches in front floor boards 4 years ago (also prone area)
- Trunk has tiny rust in spare tire well and amateur patch right side (again prone areas)
- Driver door hinge bushing worn, door drops slightly (1/16") when door opens
- Bumpers are showing their age, front is faded and rear has scratches
- Small dent in right front fender at the very front near headlight
- Fog lights are not wired (aesthetics only) and one has a stone chip in the lens
- One hubcap has some dents in it
Compare 2 Comps:
1. Lesser 142S with manual trans and 180k miles sold for $7500 about 18 months ago:
(can provide link upon request, because its against eBay Policy to have it in the listing)
2. Custom show-worthy 142 with manual trans and sold for $15,000 about a year ago:
(can provide link upon request, because its against eBay Policy to have it in the listing)
Final Notes:
In closing, there are only a couple of these 142 models with manual transmissions for sale in the entire country at any given time. There is good parts support for these cars through Volvo community and vendors because many were produced and they shared parts with other Volvo's. It is nearly impossible to find a 142S like this nowadays that has been driven and maintained regularly for half a century, let alone with complete service records. The overall condition is mostly original minus exterior paint and repairs, so it would be accurately classified as a survivor and in good driver condition. Serious buyers only please, thank you.
