Up for bid is a true survivor. A 1993 Volvo 940 wagon with 91,000 original miles on the clock.
I usually restore these but a customer of mine sent this car to me to preventatively perform the 100k scheduled maintenance on it. Anything that was due or in need was replaced or serviced, using OE Volvo or sourced European made parts. The description below as well as the collection of photos will show this car is ready to serve someone for many more years without the worry of any major repair needs. The reserve is fair and far less than if you were to take a similar car and bring it up to its current standard.
The paint (189 white) is in excellent condition. There are a few very minor dings. All power windows work perfectly and smooth as does the power sunroof. New Llumar (lifetime warranty) tint graces the glass and protects the interior.
The tan interior is in rare beautiful condition. Like new OE tan floor trays protects the carpets and I’m including a rear cargo tray to insure things remain clean no matter what you haul. 3rd row seating is included. All the dash and console lamps have been replaced, and the stereo was upgraded to a CD player. The cruise works perfectly.
1993 was a transition year for air conditioning lines and condensers. This particular car had the earlier, more costly and rare design. These were replaced with the later more efficient lines and condenser. A new accumulator-drier, o-rings and charge were added. AC blows ice cold just in time for summer.
The chassis rides on front Sachs gas struts, newer ball joints and poly stay bushings. New tie rod ends and end links were installed followed by a fresh alignment. The control arms were upgraded to steel as used in turbo models. The rear has new Sachs gas shocks. The brake system was flushed, the fluid changed and consists of newer calipers and rotors, new pads and new flex lines all around. Tires have less than 10k on a matching set of 4 General Altimax RT’s mounted on 15” factory Adhara alloys.
A compression test showed signs of a weakened head gasket – common for 20 yrs of service. There was also a slight weep at the rear main seal. The easiest and most thorough service was to pull the drive train to freshen the head and replace all the original seals. While out the oil pump o-rings, commonly overlooked – were also replaced. Head work included a complete tear down, new guide seals, hushers, porting and valve job. A 'T' cam (from a turbo) was added to improve low end torque. Its what it should have come with from the factory. The transmission was serviced / flushed, with a new filter, front pump seal and all new fluid. The cooling system was overhauled with new hoses, thermostat, sensors, water pump and complete flush / new coolant. The radiator was already recently replaced. All new drive belts, timing belt and tensioner were also installed. Alternator was tested and contacts cleaned. The separator box (crank case ventilation) and throttle body was thoroughly cleaned and polished and a new flame trap installed. New air and fuel filters, plugs, wires, cap, rotor and flywheel sensor rounds it out. When re-installed, new motor and transmission mounts were added. Last but not least, it all breathes through a new front to back stainless exhaust system, complete with a new free flow catalytic converter.
This car runs, drives and rides like a dream. It has a clean Oklahoma title. It is not a new car - but as close to one as you’ll find and one that needs absolutely nothing but a driver. Car is currently stored in a climate controlled shop in Ashland, Ohio - halfway between Cleveland and Columbus. I will assist in any way to help with arranging transport, or you are free to fly in (I can pick you up at the airport) and drive it home. You won't be disappointed. Good luck!
