1987 16 Valve GTI. 430K miles. 5 speed manual transmission. Factory A/C, moonroof, power windows, heated mirrors.
Good project or parts car. I am the second owner. This was the best, most reliable car I have ever owned and it was my daily driver until recently. Unfortunately, one of the differential rivets let go inside the transmission and busted a hole in the transmission case. I pulled the rivet out and repaired the hole with epoxy as a temporary measure, but there appears to be a second hole inside the bellhousing as it still leaks fluid. It starts, runs and drives fine, but can't go far with no trans fluid.
The car is all original with the exception of the stereo and rear MKIV brake calipers. The A/C was converted to R134a. The engine has never been rebuilt or touched in any way other than normal timing belt changes. It has recently started burning oil, about 1 qt per 1400 miles. Compression is low (~100psi)from worn rings, but there are no ticks, knocks or other unusual noises. Mobil 1 was always used from new and changed every 6000 miles. The inside of the engine, viewed from the oil fill cap, is immaculate.
The body has some moderate rust on thehatch and rear valence. The floor pans will also need some repair and there is damage to the front of the passenger fender from hitting a deer. The paint is in poor condition. The interior is clean. There is heavy wear to the driver's seat, but everything else in the interior is in very good condition.
Everything else on the car is mechanically good. It has a current PA safety inspection sticker (10/16). All glass is good. Tires have 50% tread. The suspension is tight and brakes are good. The last set of Bilstein struts lasted 180K miles and the set that's on the car now has 70K miles. The exhaust, cat-back, was replaced last year.
Pleasemessage with any questions. The car is located at one of my offices in Owings Mills, MD and would need to be towed from there as it is not driveable for any distance.
