For World War II and military vehicle fans, we have something unusual for you at MotoeXotica Classic Cars, a replica of a 1943 Volkswagen Kubelwagen.
This re-creation uses a donor chassis from a 1963 Volkswagen. Dressed in tan, the car's paint and trim are in very good overall shape. There are new side curtains and a new camouflage green canvas top. This car replicates a Kubelwagen to fairly exacting standards and makes for a great show piece where ever it goes.
The bodywork is straight and solid, the engine bay is extremely tidy and the whole package has a real military look. With a replica rifle and more.
The Kbelwagen rolls on new Free Country tires, size F78-15 at every corner. Each tire is mounted on VW cog-type wheels. The tires and wheels are all in very good order. Turn signals are inop. Besides new tires, this recreation has new brakes and a new wiring harness.
Out back is a new crate 1.6L air-cooled flat four-cylinder engine backed by a crate four-speed manual transmission with self-locking differential.
Inside, there's new upholstery, a three-spoke steering wheel and a tan instrument panel and inner door liners. A floor shifter rounds out the inside.
The Volkswagen Type 82 Kbelwagen or simply Kbel, contractions of the original German word Kbelsitzwagen (translated: 'bucket-seat car' - but when the contractions are translated literally a back-formation of 'bucket' or 'tub'-car results), is a military light utility vehicle designed by Ferdinand Porsche and built by Volkswagen during World War II for use by the German military (both Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS). Based heavily on the Volkswagen Beetle, it was prototyped and first deployed in Poland as the Type 62, but following improvements entered full-scale production as the Type 82.
The Kbelwagen was intended to be able to be manhandled by its crew when they got stuck. Easily seating four men, the 1,600-pound empty weight Kbel was easier to lift than the 660-pound heavier jeep. The rear bench would seat three in a pinch, for a total of five inside.
Full-scale production of the Type 82 Kbelwagen started in February 1940, as soon as the VW factories had become operational. No major changes took place before production ended in 1945, only small modifications were implemented, mostly eliminating unnecessary parts and reinforcing others which had proved unequal to the task. Prototype versions were assembled with four-wheel-drive (Type 86) and different engines, but none offered a significant increase in performance or capability over the existing Type 82, so these designs went nowhere. As of March 1943, the car received a revised dash and the bigger 1,131 cc engine, developed for the Schwimmwagen, that produced more torque and power than the original 985 cc unit.
When Volkswagen production ceased at the end of the war, 50,435 Kbelwagen vehicles had been produced, and the vehicle had proven to be surprisingly useful, reliable and durable.
If you're looking for a World War II military vehicle from one of the Axis powers, this recreation may be as close as you can get without spending $100,000. Stop by MotoeXotica Classic Cars today to give it an inspection.
