It is with much dread that I even post this VW thing up for sale here. I recently came across this VW Thing, a car which I have always coveted, and even in my favorite color of Orange! It has been parked for over 23 years by the second owner, and it is showing 13,200 miles which I believe to be original.

I have small children, who of course love this ca, too. My wife loves this car. That cat in the picture there? Loves this car. I really hope this car does NOT sell here during this auction. I will post this up, one time, and if it sells for what I want for it, I will reluctantly let it go. If I do not get what I believe it to be worth, then I will gladly keep it.

About this THING : 197, what I was told and believe to be 13,XXX original miles. Was parked up for over 23 years in a garage/ barn. None of the regular 'problems' like dents in the nose, rust in the floors, has not been welded on. Original floors! Original everything, except for the carburetor and battery. SUPER straight. Many new parts. Just mechanically gone though, and now has brand new :

BRAND NEW :

Battery, Carburetor, original size tires, Brakes all around to include hoses, cylinders, adjusters, wheel bearings, shoes, spring, parking brake lever service, new fuel lines throughout, filter, oil change, valve adjustment and gaskets, BRAND NEW THING SHOP Black Vinyl 'crush' top (not yet installed in these photos, new fuel gauge sender uni, bulbs throughout lighting system ...

This car starts easily, runs and drives as expecte, no smoke, no leaks, no funny noises.

GAS HEATER in trunk works! However... leaky fuel pump (at the moment) has me not using it. *dangerous*

I love the patina on this car. Original owne, in the 1980, had it painted again in its original color, but not a good paint job, so there is shiny orange paint under the orange flaking paint. Would be a great patina machine.

I sort of HATE that people take these cars and resto-mod them with big engines, big tires, big stereos, non-original paint/ etc. There are very few left original, and I doubt you would find another as original as this one. Still has original floors... and air cleaner, etc. Of course style and tastes are subjectiv, but I think it is objective to suggest there are far fewer original Things left than the newer 'restored' ones.

Seat materials are shabby in this car at the moment. Everything is present, however . All seats and seat belts. Floors look perfectly solid. This car was stored the correct wa, no mouse intrusions or rust here. Brand new vinyl top arrived, not installed yet. Door tops/ windows in good used condition still.

What else can I tell you?? I would not hesitate to drive this car anywhere, right now, but it is a primitive drive with only lap belts at the moment. No radio present. Just you, the wind, and a 1600cc dual port VW engine screaming away behind you. I can use this now as a daily driver (the kids love it!) until it starts raining and getting cold. Then... it will go into the garage. Unless one of you buy it from me.
