1970 Volkswagen Squareback Additional Info:
This VW is as it came from the Wolfsburg factory in February 1970. According to its Birth Certificate from the Volkswagen Museum in Wolfsburg, it was painted Cobalt Blue with White interior, and that's how it is today.
It had a long term owner in California, but it was in pieces when I got it. Being in pieces I could see quite clearly how original it was. There was no rust anywhere, and it had never been crashed.Since then everything has been rebuilt or checked to make sure it is in tip top condition. From the front bumper to the rear bumper, all mechanicals were rebuilt, or checked. When it was repainted, I insisted that the dashboard, inside the front trunk, and door jams were not painted because they are original. It shows that it was never crashed. The carpets are original. The spare tire has "Made in GDR" which collapsed in 1991 when Germany amalgamated.
All the mechanical repairs were done by Kermit, of KAR Parts, Houston. Kermit knows everything about air cooled Volkswagens, and did a great job. He's done two cars for me. The engine was upgraded to 1640 cc with twin carbs. The suspension was done, and the electrics gone through.
I would be happy to jump into it today and drive to California, or anywhere. It is completely reliable and cruises nicely at 60 mph. Since the rebuild it's done about 2000 miles. The only cars I own are two 1970 Volkswagens. Both are Type 3's because they are rarer, but parts are as easy to get as a Beetle.
I had expected to keep this car for the rest of my life (I'm nearly 70) and even named him Helmut, but my personal circumstances have changed, so I have to sell him.
