History of the 1949-1967 Volkswagen Beetle For a car that had a rather odious beginning as a people’s car commissioned by the pre-war German government, the Beetle came to be loved by multiple generations of basic transportation seekers on every continent with the possible exception of Antarctica. Originally promised to pre-war Germans who saved the requisite amount of Reichsmarks, it wasn’t until after the war that a Beetle was delivered to a private customer. Beetles of the 1950s and 1960s were marked by evolutionary rather than wholesale changes. A minor increase in horsepower and displacement and several different rear window designs (a small split window, a small oval window and a larger window) was about it through 1967. The 1960 “Think Small” advertising campaign is still studied in marketing classes around the world. Throughout most of its life in the U.S., the Beetle was offered in sedan and cabriolet body styles. Pre-1968 Beetles were inexpensive but never cheap. They were well-assembled, used first-rate interior materials and have a charm that’s lacking in later cars. Just about every part for a Beetle is readily available and most are quite inexpensive. 1957 Volkswagen Beetle #372895 1957 was the last year of the “oval rear window” and is said to be one of the most attractive models of all Beetle production. The previous owner bought it in this condition over fifteen years ago. He drove it very little. We found the car on four flat tires with seized brakes. A flat deck tow truck was able to bring it to a local garage where we spent $2575.68 plus another $500 on detailing. Work included a new battery, carburettor rebuilt, front and rear brake cylinders and brake shoes, new Bosch spark plugs, new brake master cylinder, new braided hose for brake master cylinder, new flex hoses, drain and flush fuel system, drain and flush oil system. We are told it was painted once in the correct Horizon Blue. The tires are old (maybe original) biasply with whitewalls. Three of the four are in good visible condition, the front right looks a little worn. I would recommend a newer set for regular driving, but these make excellent show tires for the car. The chrome is nice, some light pitting, which is to be expected at this age. Glass is also nice. The body appears dry and rust free. Overall a very nice survivor example in good running condition. We were told this is the original 1,200 cc engine and it appears to be correct for this model year.
