1966 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Patina Surf Shop Rat Rod 1915cc Dual Carbs Additional Info:
1966 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia
Very unique 1966 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia with great patina and vintage hand painted Ron Jon Surf Shop logos. Lots of thumbs up when driving around town and always people asking questions or just looking whenever I stop for gas. One of a kind and super fun to drive. This car has achieved great character from the elements of mother nature the past 52 years. The engine was updated a couple years ago and built to a 1915cc with EMPI D 40mm Deluxe dual carb kit. It has amazing torque and runs great. Starts right up, has great oil pressure, and doesn'tsmoke. The clutch was done at the same time and still has great pressure. The shifting is smooth and accurate in the transmission with the recently updated shift linkage cage and bushings. Recently the past couple months it has occasionally lightly shuddered while taking off it first gear right as you let off the clutch pedal. Only happens sometimes which I thought was weird but didn't bother me and hasn't affected the performance. Assumed it had something to do with the clutch but was told by the local classic VW mechanic shop that it needs a new Bowden tube. Guess this tube keeps the angle of the clutch cable at a certain degree to compensate when the engine/trans flex as clutch engages. Fairly inexpensive part to buy and have replaced but I haven't had the time to get it done yet.Brake shoes, rear wheel cylinders, wheel bearings, and shocks were done about a year ago. Fresh battery couple months ago. It is still running drum brakes on all four and stops just like a classic Volkswagen. Has wide 5 lug pattern with 15x7 rear wheels and 15x5 fronts. Ball joint front endwith lowered drop spindles. The steering box is tight and it tracks nicely down the road. Yes it is lowered and while I think it still rides great for being this low it does not ride like a stock Karmann Ghia.
This is not a restored car. It has bumps, bruises, scuffs, scratches, and scrapes. But that is what I was looking for when I found it. Wanted a VW Ghia that had all the cosmetic imperfections from the past 52 years that I could make mechanically sound and enjoy around town. I believe at some point in its life someone had replaced the front fender hence the non-functional welded up gas door on passenger front fender. Yes it has some body rust here and there but the pan is solid!
I have driven this is all weather conditions and while yes the heater boxes are functional and work it has sub-par defrost capabilities like almost all classic Volkswagen vehicles do. Most of my driving consisted of in town with occasional HWY. Most of the mechanical gauges and electrical items work with the exception of the Clock and Dome light. Current functioning items include Speedometer, Gas Gauge(needle broke inside but you can still tell the gas level from the nub), Horn, Turn Signals(although I was going to replace the cam plate under steering wheel as the turn signals want to stick), Wipers, Emergency Flasher, Parking Lights, Headlights, Brake Lights, and Radio(aftermarket with aux cord front and back speakers).
The interior seats and door panels were done about 12 years ago and have some sun fading to the gray and black velour material but are still very presentable and functional. I never installed a carpet kit and have always had exposed metal floor boards. Its missing the sun visors and the original headliner has some tears in it and has seen better days. The original VW glass is in great shape with no cracks. Both driver and passenger door side windows are functional and roll up and down easily. The rear quarter windows are pop out style and also work as they should.
This 1966 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia is being sold as-is with no warranty.
