Had bogus high bidder. Let's try this again...
Vintage Illusion Sky Cruiser prototype.
I built this car between 1985 and 1989. It is simply a modified VW sedan with no mechanical changes from stock, but obviously some major appearance mods. All modified body parts were designed and built by me – I take all the blame. The car is a 1963 beetle with 48,000 actual miles on it. 5,000 of those miles were put on the car after the mods.
It is a 3 Window coupe. While it is now a 2-seater, there is ample room for luggage in the finished area behind the front seats for your bagsin addition to the area in the front trunk.
I have always kept it indoors and clean, and even though I finished it 27 years ago, it has passed the test of time quite well. I hardly drive it at all anymore and it is a shame to let it sit.
It has a very nice shortened sun roof from a stock VW and air flow to the engine from both the side louvers and the gap beneath the artificial continental spare give it plenty of oxygen. Seats are from a Chrysler Cordoba (rich, Corynthian leather!?!) – yes, they fit, and are VERY comfortable.
Every time you stop, someone will come up, walk around the car and ask “what kind of car IS this?” It gets about as much attention as you can get with a weird old car.
It runs fine but it slips out of 4th gear. For the past 30 years I’ve just been using a stick wedged against the dash to hold it in place. A few years ago I had the whole front end rebuilt and it has very few miles on it since then. The headlights are a bit dim. I think I used too light of wire and/or not grounded them well enough.
I encourage you to personally inspect the car before purchase. I am only 15 miles from Colorado Springs and there are lots of flights in and out of here.
Of course there are no warranties expressed or implied.

I made all the modified parts in polyester resin and fiberglass in the traditional way by making a master, making a mold, then making a cast (gelcoat followed by resin and fiberglass layers). The body is very tight and solid.

Thanks for your questions. I am happy to respond. Clear CO title in my name. I have been making molds for about 35 years of all kinds and have literally made probably 10,000 molds and a hundred thousand casts. At one time in the 80's I also owned an operated a fiberglass shop making 1/3 scale car bodies so the quality of the fiberglass work is very good. The quality of the work done was excellent at the time...but given a 27 year aging-span, there is some primer-shrinkage and a few insignificant cracks in a couple of spots, none of which are visible except under extremely close inspection. The color we painted it was 1989 Corvette white as I recall. The paint shines like the day it was laid down because I keep it indoors and clean. Mechanically, there is no reason why it couldn't be driven any distance except for the fact that while the tires look like new, they too are 27 years old, so I wouldn't trust them. Brakes work great, it leaves a few drips of oil on the garage floor when it sits, there is not nor has there ever been any significant rust. I would say that it is almost completely rust-free. I think the rear (or front, I can't remember which) bumper connections might have a little rust where they bolt on. Engine runs very well and smooth. It sounds just like a VW motor is supposed to sound. If it sits for more than a couple days, you might have to prime the carb. The ignition switch starter function isn't working, so I installed a starter on-off switch behind the driver's seat. Turn on the key on the dash, then crank with the switch I installed (and remember to turn it off when the engine starts) and you are on your way. I probably should have just bought a new ignition switch, but again that was about 27 years ago. In summary: Original body and bodywork: good and tightly sealed. Brakes: good. Engine: good. Tires: good but old. |
