1979 Volkswagen Rabbit 1979 VW Rabbit Diesel Grease Car Additional Info:
For sale is "Fritz" my 1979 VW Diesel Rabbit. It runs well but as with most of these is cranky to start in the winter time when cold. I'm the second owner of the vehicle. I've done a bunch of work to it as my sanity project over the past 10 years or so including the following:
Replaced the original 1.5 engine with the more standard 1.6. from vwdiesel parts.com4 speed replaced with 5 speed trans (rare!)Painted in 2006Rear window seal replaced (leaked)Shifter links upgraded with "Missing Links"Grease tank installed in rear spare tire well, digital tank temp and 2nd fuel tank console in front of shifter knob.
The main reason I got the car was to have a vehicle that runs on waste veggie oil. This worked out very nicely especially here in NJ after hurricane Sandy when fuel was hard to get. My friends and family all know I burn grease so they bring their waste oil to me. I get most after Thanksgiving after folks fry turkeys then want to ditch their gently used oil. That is the best ! You just need to filter it through a 5 micron bag filter and put it in the grease tank. You always start and stop the car using Diesel fuel. Once up to temp over 130C you hit the switch and start burning diesel. The car has a buzzer box so if you forget to switch back to diesel after your drive it reminds you. This is important since if you leave grease in the lines after running it, it coagulates I'm told it is really hard to start again without flushing the lines. With the buzz box I have never had this problem.
The dashboard was cracked and kinda ugly so I got a nice fitted dash cover that looks just dandy in my humble opinion. The gas gauge did not work when I got the car and after a bug hunt and standing on my head under the dash discovered it was some sort of transistor. I got a replacement and it works great now.
Along with the car will come a box of spare parts including the original head, spare diesel pump, belt cover and the original AM radio. I replaced the original with a period correct Blaupunkt AM/FM/Long Wave / Short Wave radio . . . I believe it is the "Frankfurt" model.
There is cosmetic rust one spot near the windshield, the other on the rear passenger door. Those will need attention however the bones of the vehicle are solid.
