Up for sale is a stunning, show quality, last year of production, 1974 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Convertible that has been customized in its appearance using Porsche inspired performance, styling and design elements. The car has 46k original miles, but is showing 9k on the replace odometer. It has had 3 enthusiast owners since new, always loved, well serviced, adult owned, non-smoker, no accidents, garage kept, and no rust. It is in restored condition, near perfect cosmetic shape and every surface on the car is very clean. I just installed a brand new engine and the car runs, drives, stops and handles extremely well; everything is working and restored to a very high standard of quality. This Karmann Ghia convertible has the So-Cal look that will turn heads everywhere it goes and will easily win top honors at local car shows. I feel confident that it can be driven to anywhere in North America reliable. I am a firm believer in knowing what you are buying, so if you are interested in the deep description read on.
Past ownership history of the car
The first owner acquired it new in Kansas City Mo in 1974. This Karmann Ghia was originally painted orange. The first owner sold it in 1996 to the 2nd owner who was a medical doctor in Kansas City. During the doctors 20 years of ownership the car received 2 major restorations, the first restoration occurred in 1997 shortly after he acquired it and the 2nd restoration was performed in 2008. During the second restoration the cars received a very high quality base coat clear coat paint job in Porsche Guards Red with black out trim and accents, showing very few flaws, some small scratches, two small dings and a 1 inch paint crack, the paint is two footer. The car also received 2 ½ inch front spindle drop, Porsche Fuchs wheels, Porsche type color keyed sport mirrors, Bosch halogen head lights with flat lenses and a Porsche inspired painted metal dash with full accompaniment of VDO gauges including the large VDO Tachometer. The speedometer was also replaced in 2008 and shows 8900+ miles The 2nd owner rebuilt the engine and transmission with high quality HI performance parts and drove the car for 8600 miles with a 1948cc engine. In 2015 the engine started to knock and he stopped driving it and I acquired it soon after.
During my ownership the third and most recent restoration
I sent the car's engine out to be professionally rebuilt by our local DFW VW Guru Doug with Quilitec. Doug performed the tear down inspection and found that a cam keeper failed and it was in jested by the engine, damaging the crank. Doug and I came up with a logical plan to rebuild the engine based on reliability and performance using a 1776cc configured engine, using all new parts and no expense spared. I preferred not to build a punched out engine that is prone to premature failure, like others on the market, but a mild performance 1776cc engine with quality parts that should last 100,000 miles. The cost for the engine rebuild was more than $4500 all said and done.
Here is a list of the engines new and rebuilt parts:
New Scat crank, light weight Scat Flywheel was resurfaced and a new clutch was used, new cylinders, new Scat rockers and tappets, new push rod tubs, new aluminum push rods, new pistons, rebuilt heads, new oil sump and pump, new bearing, new plugs, new air filters, new belt, new crank pulley, recent starter, new fuel pump, new fuel filter, new bosh coil, new 009 distributor with electronic ignition, I also had the dual Solex carburetor's rebuilt. The engine also has a very beautiful, custom made, hi-performance, dual carburetor intake manifold that I left in raw metal and clear coated it, showing the perfect brass welds. It has a new motor mounts and rubber seal around the engine. I also used all new hose clamps, bolts, nuts screws and washers. All the engines stainless, aluminum, brass and bronzes parts were polished. The engine covers and air box was sand blasted and repainted in satin black. The engine has no detected leak oil leaks an when at hot idle shows 45 lb. of presser and 60 LB. at speed. It has a new EMPI Pee Shooter exhaust that sounds great. I have put less than 50 miles on the engine so far and have changed the oil twice and it running perfect, I am still in the engines brake in period and have not gone above 4000 RPM on the engine yet.
Here is a list of other items that I replaced with new or recently restored:
It also has newer rear axles, new KYB shocks up front, new Koni adjustable coil over shocks in the rear, new front spindle bearing, and new front brake pads. The tires are wide and low profile 15 inch in the front and 16 inch in the rear and have 95% tread life and are staggered in size, The car also has a new battery and recent generator. The interior has a nice padded dash with no cracks, nice gray carpetingand very nice door cards and interior plastic and trim. It has a new black Forever Sharp steering wheel with VW logo, The underside of the car looks like new and was wires wheeled, sanded cleaned and repainted with satin black and black undercoating.
It has a recently install Blaupunkt Acapulco sound system with CD player an Apple IPod interface. The sound system is connected to a dual, Boss 200 watts per channel amplifier, pushing a pair of Kicker 3 way, 6 inch marine speakers in cases, mounted on the rear deck behind the front seats on a stainless steel bar, that sound loud and clear.
Also included with the sale of the car is a new pair black RS Sport seats with a nice design that cost about $700 and a new black German Cloth convertible top with headliner, costing over $600, but these items have not been installed. The existing top is still in good shape and so is the original seats. The car also has a usable spare tire, the jacking tools and some spareparts. There is an original owners manual and some of the records.
Karmann Ghia History
The Karmann Ghia body designed by the Italian design firm Carrozeria and hand built by German coach builder Karmann. The Karmann Ghia was an instant success. The car has had a very long and successful production run from 1955 to 1974. ("I couldn't find a sports car of my of my dreams, so I built it."-Ferdinand Porsche)
