Well, the time has come. Up for sale is my 1973 subaru powered westfalia camper.
This bus is truly one of a kind. I've personally put over 400 hours into it. It started as just your basic shell. I saw the potential and wanted to hit the road. As per usual with a new toy, I got extremely carried away. Everything from the tires up has been gone through with a fine tooth comb. All she needs is someone who has the time to put her to use.
The swap was performed beginning of last summer and since has roughly 4k on it. Now there's nothing wrong with good old air cooled, but to me, it was lacking significantly. I needed something that would be trouble free on the road, and have more than enough power to merge into highway traffic.
The technical: (if mentioned; it was a brand name new part installed unless noted otherwise)
**Motor**
1998 subaru sohc ej22
Prior to install:
-headgaskets
-timing kit
-water pump
-valve cover gaskets
-plugs and wires
-intake and exhaust manifold gaskets
-cam/crank seals
-crank and cam position sensors
-Fuel filter
-Fuel pump
-belts
-aftermarket intake
-new alternator
-new battery
-new thermostat
The radiator was purchased new. It is technically for an 86 dodge pick up. I've mounted it between the frame rails with a single large puller fan above. Temps run perfect. 198f while cruising and around 205f at idle once warm. Fan kicks on and does its job as it should!
As far as the electrical goes; one I had pulled the entire wiring harness from the donor subaru, I sent the harness up to AutoVentures LLC (Jeff is a great guy and highly recommend working with him) he got the harness all modified and sent it back down to me promptly. Once back, it was a matter of installing and getting it set up. Under the Z bed is where you'll find the ECU and relay boxes. Everything is setup to be extremely user friendly (and still has open ports for adding switched items (extra lights etc))
**Suspension/Steering/Tires/Brakes**
-all tires (including full size spare) are all new (95%+ life left)
- tie rods
- steering dampener
- center link pin
- steering box
- drag bar
- sway bar
- shocks all around
- all new bushings and beam was pulled/cleaned/greased
-all four corners brakes have been gone through and replaced. The factory vw brake booster still gets to be utilized and is ran to the intake manifold of the subaru motor
**Interior (my favorite)**
Everything you see was hand done by myself with the help of a friend if something needed to be held.
All of the cabinetry is made of maple, birch, or pine (depending on the piece) and the floor is made of "Monday bamboo"
Up front we have all new upholstered seats and door cards (black leather) along with surrounding speakers front and rear for the tunes.
The pop top canvas and seals has been replaced, along with the cot fabric. Everything is fully functional and good as new!
(I also HAVE and will INCLUDE the original (all pieces) of the 1973 oem interior (sink, jumpseat, over head, cabinets))
**Exterior**
Well she speaks for herself in this department. Everything (and I mean everything is brand new)
Metal work has been done, and she has a beautiful new paint job on the lower half. Up top, I went through and touched up and imperfections that I could find.
All the lights, trim, lenses, and emblems have been replaced with brand new oem pieces.
My asking price of course is OBO but I will tell you how I've come up with it. I'm not basing it off the time I've spent working on it, but more so the quality and result of that time. I've spent awhile researching what these go for in all conditions (fleabay, CL, the samba, fb pages, forums etc) and they tend to range completed from 15k to 35k depending on location and all of that jazz. To me, 35k sounds insane. But, I feel my asking price is fair for what there is. I have yet to see a completed swap go onto the market. So it is hard to pinpoint the value in that aspect. So I look at it as, you've got something here that will be 10x more reliable, 5x quicker, and just as equally beautiful.
I'm sure I've forgot to mention things. It's hard to remember every little detail when you put this much time into something. But, you can rest assured she's ready for the road.
