1982 Volkswagen Rabbit Additional Info:
My dad and I picked up this car 2 years ago. We've been working on it a fair amount during that time. The goal was to get it up and running and use it as a weekend cruiser. When we bought it we were told it only needed a fuel pump. Well, that turned out to not be the case. We've put a ton of time and parts into this to get it where it is. It starts/runs/drives, but it does still need a few items to be a good weekend cruiser. Overall, it's a great MK1 cabriolet that isn't all rusted out. The car was repainted at some point in its life. It isn't perfect, but it cleans up nicely. My dad and I have lost interest in working on it together, so that is why I am selling the car.
Here's the list of all the work we've done:
New battery
Removed alternator and had it checked
New fuel tank
New fuel lines front to rear
New fuel pump
New fuel filter
New fuel pump relay
Cleaned CIS fuel distributor
Cleaned fuel injectors and verified spray pattern
New fuel inject seals
New distributor cap and rotor
New spark plugs
New spark plug wires
New rear brakes
New rear brake cylinders
New rear brake lines from front to rear
Replaced rear brake proportioning valve
New oil and filter
New valve cover gasket
New front strut tower bushings
New front lower control arms and bushings
New front ball joints
New shifter bushings
New premium carpet throughout
New muffler, tail pipe, and mid pipe....basically new exhaust from the downpipe back
New exhaust hangers
The front strut towers are solid. The only real rust area is in the front passenger inner fender well. The rest of the car is really solid. The floors are great and all of the exterior body is great, which is likely due to the repaint at whatever point in its life.
Known issues:
Exhaust leak in the flexible portion of the downpipe...that's the only part of the exhaust that wasn't replaced.
There is a "whirring" noise that is coming from the front end that is not engine/trans related. If I had to guess, I would say it is either a wheel bearing or CV joint.
Clunking in the front end over bigger bumps. Dad lives on a gravel road and that is when you notice it the most. My guess would be front strut or wheel bearing.
There is an oil indicator light/buzzer that comes on after 2,000 rpm. There is not an oil pump/oil pressure issue. It is supposed to just be the sensor. We replaced the sensor, but the light/buzzer are still happening. It could be that the new sensor ($15) is bad or it could be a wiring issue.
The tires are in good condition, but are probably old. They do hold air just fine.
Could likely use an alignment.
The top has been patched in a couple of areas.
Let me know if you have any questions.
