1966 Triumph TR 4A IRS Additional Info:
Description
This is a beautiful California TR 4A with thedesirable IRS and Wire Wheel options. The car has a build date of late 1966, near the end of the TR 4A production, giving it the original wood dash option (replaced with a gorgeous dark teak) and improved rear end as used inthe later TR250 and TR6 models. I purchased this carfrom the previous owner 12 years ago and have driven it only ahandful of times, so it has seen very light use and only in the summer by a long time Triumph owner who garaged it from purchase. The mostdesirable, rarest and easiest to drive, maintain and enjoy of all the TR SportsCars, with the glorious acclaimed styling of Giovanni Michelotti. This car is enjoyable to drive and has always been my favorite model Triumph.
It has an older restoration that was done to a driver quality standard by the previous owner about 15 years ago. The work described as a first repaint on a beautiful, undamaged body using an original Triumph Sapphire Blue color. At the time, all the window rubber front, side and rear where replaced with all new original correct type chrome finishing strips so often missing on these cars. A newwindscreen (windshield) was fitted at the same time. He replaced the rocker panels, due to some corrosion (even on a California car) and the interior. The console surround was redone, a new convertible boot cover and a convertible top where replaced as well. All the fuzzy door seals had been replaced and most of the carpeting was replaced in exact original patterns. New front and rear bumpers, overriders where fitted and a new correct grille replaced. A correct period working Triumph badged AM pushbutton Radio was fitted with antennae. The car has 5 radial tires with bead blasted wire wheels with correct winged spanners. Interior door panels andcapping are very good. All gauges, wipers, heaters seem to be working and the trunk is fitted with the correct casing board and floor.
Mechanically, he noted that the engine was rebuilt with a new crankshaft, bearings, Deves rings, valve job to unleaded specs and all ancillaries replaced or rebuilt. The brake system and all hydraulics where replaced new, as was the clutch, starter, alternator and battery. The radiator was also rebuilt at the time. The front and rear shocks where replaced, the front end was rebuilt with new wheel bearings, new front upper ball joints and control arm bushings, and the rear suspension rebuilt as well. A new brake master cylinder was fitted, new clutch and slave cylinders, new heater valve, upgraded valve cover seal, a new differential pinion seal, etc. Plus new correct SU Carbs where fitted after the engine rebuild, which was done with the modern crankshaft seal kit fitted.
The car has nice panel fit, especially the bonnet which lines up very well to the body and doors and has all the correct hood stays and guide pins. The driver door fit is less than perfect, but correctable seephotos. Passenger side door has a nice fit. Please contact if you have any questions or would like more photos or need a specific image of the car.
The TR was titled andregistered in California when Ipurchased the car. It is presentlyregistered inMaine, it was in storage for much of the past 10 years, life seemed to have gotten in the way and this TR did not get the joy of travel she deserved. We have moved and our present residence does not have a garage, so I have decided to let someone else enjoy this TR more than I can. Recent work includes new plugs, rotor, points, fuel pump, choke cable and knob, and clutch slave cylinder. I welcome any Inspections, will includerecords from the work done on the restoration and an original Owners Handbook for TRIUMPH TR4A
Condition
As stated above, this car is not a show vehicle, and absent a complete restoration, will not be. It is a reasonablystraightclean, dependable driver that is great fun to drive and enjoy, and turns heads wherever it goes. This is a 50 year old car and like anything that old, there is always something to do, but she is solid and one of the best around! It is however sold AS-IS and with all faults.
