1980 Triumph TR7 Spider
With a corner page triangle graphic, and a tilted angle shot of the actual car, the advertising touted "The Shape of Things to Come". It was British Leyland's attempt to enter the mainstream market with an American Car look. Looking back at these cars and then seeing the evolution of similar sports cars, Triumph TR7 did not trail blaze the hidden headlight wedge shape but played an integral part in it.
For consignment a TR7 Spider Special Edition 2-owner car and one of a mere 1,070 built. It is an all original car except for recovered seats in black vinyl, and a passenger side mirror added for extra safety. Only 28,100 actual miles.
Exterior
This wedge-shaped hidden headlight example in Black with Maraschino Spider decals shows a few faults, scratches and nicks, but is overall in nice condition. A rear luggage rack has been added, and the convertible is clean, tear free, and has the Triumph 3 windowed convertible top. Black door trim, a Maraschino Pinstripe on the belt line, and cast alloy wheels complete the exterior Spider package.
Interior
As well as a distinctive paint and striping combination, the Spider Special Edition features a unique, and quite tasteful, interior trim package. This included Pewter carpet, the wheel from the TR8, new black vinyl upholstery, and a radio/cassette player. The carpet and dash on the TR7 look to be in very good condition and has the original radio/cassette. The door trims have been cut to fit aftermarket speakers.
Drivetrain
The Spider Special Edition package brought no mechanical or performance upgrades to the table for the TR7, so what you received was the standard 1,998cc 4-cylinder engine, and 5-speed manual transmission. The performance was all that you would expect from a car with 88hp on tap, with a 0-60mph time of 10.9 seconds. This power plant version is fed by a dual Zenith Carburetor setup. This engine may have been restored at one time, as typically the valve cover will be subject to peeling paint, and this one is near perfect.
Undercarriage
Typical surface rust, and patina are noted underneath, with no areas of concern, making this a structurally sound car.
Professionally maintained, 2 owners, low mileage, plenty of record keeping, all add up to a fine example of the TR7. Triumph finally got it right for this year with the convertible, and the Black with Maraschino trim looks great. "The Shape of Things to Come".
