1970 Porsche 914 Additional Info:

You may have seen this car cruising along the Boulevard (in Knoxville, TN) during late afternoons. I adore the 914, but with me at 6’ 4”, 245 lbs, and entering my 7th decade, it’s time for this car to have a new owner. If I were younger and lighter I’d keep it. It's a blast to drive. Since I've owned this car it has been garage kept, and has not been exposed in any way to adverse weather conditions, period. I will add more pics as soon as I can. Also, I can send via email. Please understand, this car is not in original condition, rather it is a very nice restoration. Some of the pics are from the original ad from the dealer in April of ’21. I’m not using these to mislead anyone about condition, but as reference. The car essentially appears as it did in the spring of 2021. I can send updated photos for the same views as requested. The car has a clean title.

I purchased the car in April 2021, thinking I would keep it for a couple of years, then sell or trade it. I drove it gently about once a week on short jaunts and it drove fine until the spring of 2023 when something inside the engine ‘let go’ and seized while I was on a drive. When I inspected I found that the side electrode of cylinder-4’s sparkplug was crammed into the center electrode, so I pretty much knew from my perspective that the engine was a lost cause. The car sat in the garage until I purchased the replacement engine in August of 2023, and had a very reputable mechanic in the region take on the project of the replacement. He had spoken at length with the seller of the engine and felt very confident we were getting a sound, clean 1.8L engine. I got the car back this past March, and was thrilled with the results.

I’ve had a lot of work done on this car over the last year, including the engine replacement, and installation of high performance double-barrel carburetors. The seller of the engine gave me a 90-day, 100% refund guarantee starting at the time the engine was installed and running. I had the gearshift assembly rebuilt with new bushings, new fuel pressure regulator, new fuel pump, and the starter and alternator were rebuilt with new components. The mechanic said the replacement engine’s valve train looked almost new, the valves were adjusted, and the engine compression checked fine. A new DieHard Gold battery was installed. These repairs cost me $3,800, and the replacement engine cost me $1,900. The clutch has been replaced and is completely solid - there is no slipping. Oil consumption is about Nil. There are a few drops of oil underneath after the car sits for several days. The mechanic says this is absolutely insignificant. Note the picture of the clean dip-stick after driving the car about 50 miles a week between March and August. When I took the car back I asked the mechanic “So, what condition is this car now as to where and how far I could drive?” He answered “You can drive it anywhere.” The seller of the replacement engine said it had approximately 62K miles on it, but I can’t verify that.

The car starts and runs great. Please note, there is no choke on the new EMPI double barrel carbs. It needs a bit of priming to start - one or two pumps of the accelerator. Cold weather starts require some warm up. The old carbs were anemic single barrels. Now, there’s a significant boost with the double-barrel carbs. The frame is clean and not rusted at all, the infamous 'hell hole' is completely closed and solid, the body is in wonderful condition, and paint is in almost perfect condition. The tires are in great shaped, and little used. Both trunks are in great condition, with no rust. The interior is in fine condition, with the exception of the passenger arm rest needing some attention attaching the lower portion to the upper portion of the arm rest. Headlights and all other lights work fine, including the lower driving lights. Hazard lights work. I believe there is one of two tail light bulbs out on the right rear. All signals work.

The odometer is stuck at 91K+ miles, so I am unsure of the actual mileage. Inside controls controls work. Radio, antenna retracts, horn, signal lever, dash lights, window cranks, door handles in and out work, doors close tight, no flex that I am able to determine, The lower heat control near the seats appears to work, but I can’t determine if the dash controls do anythings. I have all keys, and the door locks are tight as is quite typical. The interior locks work fine.

I think the car might need new struts/shocks. The handling is fine, but the struts have bottomed-out a few times when I’ve strayed into some significant pot holes. Still, I think the car could be driven as is for an extended time.
