1970 Porsche 914 Additional Info:

Out ofOsnabrück, West Germany, comes the brainchild of Ferdinand Piech: The 1970 Porsche 914. It was the most successful car in the Porsche line up during it's production run.

This one is chassis number #4712907092, born November, 1970. Color code L20E, Signal Orange.Paint appears to be original. It is among the first 21 thousand of the 118 or so thousand produced. The odometer reads 74,890 miles, and appears legit. The compression readings on all four cylinders of the 1.7 litre engine are acceptable, and vary well within the margin of error of a valve adjustment according to the Porsche mechanic who owned it before the person we acquired it from.
It starts, runs, drives, and stops. The motor sounds happy and eager.

We put in a new fuel pump.It isn’t original, but the original fuel pump comes with it should you wish to rebuild it.Original fuel pumps can be hard to find.We also put in a brand new master cylinder, and of course a battery.

One of the main issues with these cars can be rust. There are several known places it that can boost the expense of finishing the project beyond what any wife might tolerate. Thus, we have provided many extra up close pictures of the areas known to have issues. With the exception of the battery tray, which is almost always affected, this California car does not appear to have any serious penetrative rust. This is crucial to maintaining a modest improvement budget. All the rust we have found outside the battery tray appears to be light and on the surface, nothing structural, and this fact alone separates this 914 from many others out there. You are welcome to see the car and verify this in person, or request more pictures of specific areas.

There are some oil seeps from the axle seals, as is normal for a car that hasn’t been run in a while. The driver’s side door has a wide shallow dent, and we’ve taken detailed photos of any blemishes. There are some parts that come with it, as the prior owner took off the door handles when he expected to go have it painted. The jack is in the trunk, and it comes with a Haynes shop manual.

The lack of rust in critical areas, the basic originality of the car, and its small size add up to an appetizing and manageable endeavor that won’t overwhelm when undertaken.

If you do take it on, let'sremember why. Imagine yourself with this car in California. When it comes to driving pleasure, are there that many cars you’d rather find yourself in during the first days of summer cruising north from Cambria on Highway One hyped up on hipster coffee? On your left, the deep blue sea is lacing up in lazy horsetails on the briskearly afternoonbreeze. Ahead, sweeping vistas and endless sweet spots beckon in apex after curving apex.On your right, Hearst Castle. You escape the flat stuff and climb into Big Sur. There’s the $7 dollar a gallon gas station, which you whistle past due to good gas mileage. You pass Esalen, mecca of new agers, psychonauts, and hippies—excellent massages too, of course. Then a burger and a beer at Nepenthe. On to a lazy evening and excellent food in Carmel.

The next day, you’re in Napa wending your way from winery to winery having joined a vintage car tour. Are you and your friend, girlfriend, boyfriend, wife, husband, or significant other having a great time? You betcha.

The next afternoon, you find yourself cruising up the Lost Coast, thinking about Oregon.

The point is, the 914 isn’t just another cute little car, it’s an affordable key that opens the door wide open to the world of dry champagne and grey poupon. It’s a meal ticket to a superior lifestyle available to you at any time you might feel the urge to live it. You would be hard pressed to get more value in exchange for your resources, unless of course, you prefer some sort of fixed speed vintage spaghetti bicycle. However, there are a lot of hills in both Big Sur and Napa, and does your significant other pedal as hard as you do? Unlikely!

Let us not forget that Dr. Piech won the 86 hours of Nurburgring with 914’s taking 1st, 2nd, and 3rdplaces, a sweep, just four months before this car was built. And it was Motor Trend’s Import Car of the Year in 1970.
