I moved to Mission Viejo, California in 1984. It was probably a week or so after I joined the YMCA Gym in the middle of town when I saw for the first time this same 1981 Guards Red 911SC. I know it was the same car because the gal that was driving it was a flight attendant. I’ll never forget the first time I walked up and looked at it parked in a corner parking spot way over toward the curb. When I was photographing the car this week I instantly remembered the car by the little clear “Orange County Airport Parking” Sticker in the back window; it was there the first time I looked at it those thirty-one years ago. She was probably 45 then and really a looker… both her and the car.
The car is as impressive as the first time I saw it in the summer of 1984. It glistened then and it still has the same shine on it today. Her mechanic of the last 25 years just recently bought it from her and a day later my best friend bought the car. That was four years ago. I am helping him sell it today.
In the grand scheme of sports car history written fifty years from now, the late 1970‘s and early 1980s will surely be considered part of the infancy stage. This will be known as the era when sports cars were still sports cars: seat of the pants, simple and more than fun to drive. In this era when it came to sticking the rubber to the planet Earth nobody delivered it better than Ferry Porsche and his team of engineers. Simple air cooled, fuel injected engines ruled the day. Those days are forever gone and while Porsche still pushes the envelope in every manner possible there is just something magical about a Porsche from this era that truly epitomizes the real spirit of 911’s. And if you like turning a wrench these are actually workable without using a computer.
And when it comes to degrees of greatness within the entire spectrum of Porsche 911’s, truth be told the 3.0L Carrera’s have to be right there at the top of the heap, especially if you are inclined to favor “feedback” over luxury. These cars remind you every second that you are driving a car, meant to be driven, with pinpoint accuracy.. “point and click” and it does exactly like it is told... quickly!!
When it comes to Porsche ownership there has always been a certain type of guy that is drawn to their behavioral characteristics. I don’t know why this sweet gal was drawn to a Porsche back in the early 80’s. The amazing thing to me is that she kept it so immaculate and all those miles later it is just as impressive as the day she bought it.
ABOUT THE CAR
Our little Targa #1223 was purchased originally by CL’s husband, on September 21st of 1981 at Park Porsche Audi in Buena Park, CA. My guess is there were probably no Red ones available at the Newport Beach Dealer, so off they went to Buena Park. CL was fastidious about her maintenance schedule to this wonderful little gem. Maintenance and service records total more than $23K over the period of 34 years that she owned it. This is an extensive history that documents the mileage from day one. It appears CL must have bought another car probably around 95 or so and the Red Targa probably became a weekend/fun car. Although from the looks of this car one would think that it was never a daily driver, but looking at the log of miles it certainly was back in the 80’s.
CL’s little gem runs and drives simply like it is brand new. I have driven many of these cars and this one is as tight as I have ever driven. This car has that feel as if it was driven off the showroom floor yesterday. I defy anyone to drive it and tell me it is not the nicest one they have ever driven from this era.
I myself have been involved with restoration, paint and body work for over 25 years. I would not call myself an expert in Porsche, but I have pulled many apart and done partial to full restoration on 911’s and 356‘s for many years. Attending Porsche events is something that has been one of my favorite things to do over the last 30 years and I have not seen a nicer SC with 141K miles on it ever. I have only seen a handful of totally restored or unmolested under 10K mile cars that compare to this survivor 911 SC Targa. I consider myself somewhat of a freak, but even I could not have kept this car to this level of presentation. Obviously with only 3700 miles average per year this was a car that has enjoyed a relatively easy life so far. It is obvious from the records that the service and maintenance was something that was done without hesitation.
Clearly from the condition of the paint and the interior components this car did not spend a lot of time sitting in sunlight. Everything is just too nice. One of the interesting things that I found in the paperwork was a Certificate of Warranty from BodyGlo on 7-1-83. Four years later she did it again by BodyGlo at the local Mercedes Benz Dealership in Mission Viejo. Whatever this paint finish product did was phenomenal and probably has a lot to do with the incredible finish that is on this car.
To say I am a survivor car whack-o would be an understatement of grand proportion. I own eleven cars and six of them are stellar survivor examples in all categories. This has to rank up there as one of the best I have ever seen. This Red Targa is off the Survivor Richter Scale.
Absolutely Fabulous Guards Red Targa with Black Interior. This is a ONE Owner, Never Hit, Unmolested Body Survivor. I would call this vehicle a very strong Show/Driver. The original California Blue Plates from 1981 have never been off the car.
BODY & PAINT
Note: In the pictures you will notice the sun was dancing around on me a lot… so some of the pictures make the car a bring red and others are more subdued. The clouds were really playing games with me, but hopefully I have enough of super sunlight and shade that you get the idea. If you know Guards Red, then you know what I am talking about.
I cannot find any fault with the body or paint anywhere on the car. The color on the paint panels match all the way around the car. There is no evidence anywhere of body work ever being performed on the car as far as I can tell. It is obvious from the condition of the Bra that is neatly stored in a bag in the trunk that is was used and from the condition of the front bumper and hood, it worked well. There are just a handful of tiny tiny rock chips on the front end and hood.
Note: when you look at the undercarriage pictures you will notice there is a red tint to the finish of the undercoating. That is the red body paint bleeding through the undercoating from the underside. It IS NOT over-spray from a repaint. Look at all the other components of the undercarriage, this is only because the underside of the car was painted red at the factory before the undercoating was applied and it has obviously oxidized over 34 years.
The rest of the paint has incredible depth and shine to it, matching all the way around the car. Truly remarkable for 34 years old. I would rate the paint overall at 9.5 out of 10 for overall appearance and 10.0++ for a Survivor. Either way it is an outstanding body and paint car. When you first look at the car you think “this has to be a brand new paint job”. But, IT’S NOT!!!
This car has a virgin body on it, I would rate it a 9.8.
Take time to study the pictures I posted... especially the close-ups of the doors, hood and rear hatch gaps, the undersides of the doors. Notice looking down the sides of the car how nicely the doors fit from top to bottom and front to back. You could use a micrometer to measure the gaps from one door to the other and hood to rear engine cover. Only on a survivor car or a $100K restoration, done by the best of the best. When looking at the rear trunk alignment in the overall body picture from the rear it almost looks like it is a little high and a little bigger gap on one side… NO, it’s the shadows created in the pictures, so please take the time to study the closeup pictures of the trunk to see how perfectly it fits and how the gaps are the same on both sides.
There are ZERO signs of rust anywhere/ever on this car. The pans and rails are gorgeous.
The Targa Top is in exceptional condition, it looks like it is brand new, but instead it is 35 years old. I would rate it a 9.9.
INTERIOR
The Interior on the car is a 8.5 out of 10. The seats, dash, door panels and carpets are all in extremely good condition. The door panels are exceptional as are the back seats. The carpets are in fabulous shape and the mats are newer. The original sun-visors are a little “puffy” and have some sag to them. For show purposes I would probably have them redone. The seat surfaces are leather and have the typical “patina” leather look to them. There is a small slit in the driver seat that seems to be staying the same. A piece of tape would secure it but I just want people to know that it is there. There is a little wear to the seat bolster (see closeup picture). Personally I would leave these seats exactly like they are, they look great. But, if you like perfection and simple dye by a guy that knows what he is doing and they would look brand new. The cushioning in the seats feels like a new car. The one panel with the slit could be easily replaced.
MECHANICALLY SPEAKING
I can say without any question that the feel of this particular 911 represents to me one of the most “tight” examples from this vintage that I have ever driven. The car simply “feels” like it is brand new. I don’t really know how to describe this feeling, except that I have felt it before, usually with extremely low mile examples. It’s clear to me that this car has always been in the hands of an adult woman driver, someone that respected the car, maintained it and never raced it or drove it hard. My friend who has owned it for the last four years has barely driven it, maybe 1000 miles. He just completely went through the brakes on the car.
There is not one drop of oil leak from this car, the cases are completely dry. See the list above for the most recent work orders on the car. In 2004 (less than 2000 miles ago) the engine was completely gone through, including pistons and valve job.
The car runs and drives FLAWLESSLY, is very quick and handles like a go-cart.
The car tracks down the road at 80 mph with your hands off the steering wheel absolutely dead nuts straight. The ride quality is exemplary. There are no noises, creaks, squeaks or leaks. Every interior and exterior light works exactly like it should.
There is nothing that this car needs mechanically.
Simply put this is one of the nicest, original, documented SC’s you will find. This car has only known life in Mission Viejo, CA in a GARAGE and with my friend in Coto de Caza for the last four years. Meticulously owned by two owners. This is simply as nice as it gets.
You would be proud to show up at any Porsche Show or Porsche Club event in this car and would likely score highly in judging standards if that is what you are into. In the Survivor or Preservation Class this car will be recognized as probably one of the nicest in the Country. Period.
The title is free and clear.
