1973 PONTIAC TRANS AM 455COMPLETELY ORIGINAL, MATCHING NUMBERS, FACTORY 4 SPEED CLOSE RATIO A/C, PB, PS
The Trans Am was an American icon during its production run from 1969-2002. While it lost some horsepower as the 1970s DOT/EPA restrictions began neutering muscle cars, it remained a powerful well balanced driving machine. As with most collectible cars, the early models are the most desirable, with 1973 being thelast of the original second generation cars before Pontiac gave the Firebird line the ugly "shovel nose" 5 mph front end.
This 1973 is one of 1420 manual transmission Trans Ams built that year. This one has its original matching numbers M21 close ratio 4 speed, which is veryrare and desirable. It was ordered with power steering, air conditioning, power brakes and no center console (see PHS documents in photo gallery).

  • 4 speed manual M21 transmission
  • Air conditioning
  • Power brakes (front discs)
  • Power steering
  • Rally gauges with tach
  • 455 engine
It has never been painted or restored in any way and has just 82,000 original Southern California miles. It still bears its original blue/yellow California license plates from when it was new. It is registered until April, 2027. It comes with a clear California title in my name.
The original Buccaneer Red paint is extremely shiny over most of the car, but there are lots of chips, paint loss on the roof and a few small dings. There is a dent in the passenger door. The paint is very flawed on the rear deck-see photos. The metal integrity is intact on the trunk lid. On the front endura nose, the original paint is dull. The original decals are nice except the hood bird which is faded and dull. There is about a 1.5" weird rust hole as shown on the rear deck under the window. The front lip of the hood also has a bit of rust. The rest of the car-floors, rockers, fender, trunk, etc. is completely rust free and original-see underside photos. The car has never been in an accident and every piece of sheetmetal is original.
The original chrome is shiny, but shows a bit of freckling. The original fiberglass front spoiler is broken in the center-see photos.
The upholstery, like the paint is 100% original. The dash top is perfect with no cracks. The gauges are nice as is the machine turned dashboard. The headliner is excellent with no tears or sag. The door panels are excellent. The seats have some tears and pulling at the seams. The original carpet has faded, but shows minimal wear. The rear deck is straight and un warped but shows some fading.
The original 455 engine starts immediately and runs great. There is no smoke and the engine is smooth and powerful. The rear muffler is brand new. The only modification done to the car is the installation of high performance tubing exhaust headers (by the previous owner) and a brand new aluminum radiator. The exhaust header gaskets leak. The differential front seal leaks a slight bit. The rear end is smooth and quiet. The A/C is not working. The master cylinder and rear wheel cylinders are new. The original M21 close ratio transmission shifts beautifully and the clutch is nice and smooth. Four new BF Goodrich Radial T/A tires were installed last month.
For pictures of all the matching numbers please see the next to last photo in the gallery.
A knowledgeable buyer will understand what this car is and how rare it is to find one in unrestored condition like this. With a "restored" car (for twice the price or more) you never really know what you're getting-major rust/collision repair? bondo? faked numbers? They're out there and buyer beware. With an unrestored car like this you know EXACTLY what you're getting-a true, honest, unmolested original. It's a perfect car to leave the patina as-is or do a "sympathetic" refurbishment and do the paint and seat coverings. Either way this is a rare car, in rare condition and they don't come available like this very often if ever.
