I have for sale this low mileage Barn Find 1969 Pontiac Grand Prix SJ that I bought out of the estate of the original owner. The car sat in a garage less than two blocks from my house since 1982. The first time the car had seen the light of day in almost 35 years was when my buddies and I pulled it out of hibernation March of this year. The odometer shows just over 33800 miles and from all of the records it is believed to be original. The story of why it was parked in 1982 was that the owner worked for the telephone company and he was getting sent out on the road for an extended period of time, so he parked the car and placed it on cinder blocks to unload the suspension and he just forgot about it and left it there. He later passed away, I am good friends with one of the men that were handling the estate and bought the car from the estate.
The car is equipped with the 370 horse 428 cubic inch engine with a 400 turbo automatic transmission and a 10 bolt positraction rear end with 3:23 gears. Factory chrome valve covers and chrome air cleaner. Also has a factory transmission and power steering cooler built into the radiator.
The car has the optional leather interior with bucket seats and a console. The car is equipped with Rally gauges, power steering, power disc brakes, clock (that is correct twice a day), working factory cruise control, cold original Frigidare GM AC, and an AM radio.
I have the original paper work for when the car was ordered from University Motors in Iowa City, Iowa and the original owners manual as well as the original 1969 Pontiac sales / owners brochure.
Since I got the car home in March I have installed the following parts new:
Fuel tank, fuel pump, fuel lines, carburetor rebuilt, fuel filter, water pump, radiator hoses, radiator, thermostat, intake gaskets, exhaust gaskets, valve cover gaskets, transmission pan gasket, transmission filter and modulator, cap, rotor, points, condenser, plugs, plug wires, belts, alternator rebuilt, rubber brake lines, rotors, brake pads, master cylinder, complete rear brake rebuild including wheel cylinders, all vacuum hoses, battery, battery cables, washer pump, air cleaner filter, cruise control diaphragm, cruise control cable, installed new wheel bearings and serviced the front end. I also kept all of the original parts and have all of the receipts for the new parts for reference. Over $3000 was spent in parts to bring the old girl to life and making the car road worthy. The car needs nothing mechanically, you can put the key in the ignition and drive her anywhere with no problems.
I also flushed the engine water jackets and cleaned the engine compartment up. Just had a complete, (Manifold to tail pipes.) Flowmaster 40 series dual exhaust installed last week. The car sounds amazing.
The paint was flat and faded from all of the years of sitting uncovered so we tried to bring some life back into her by wet sanding and buffing. It now has the patina look that everyone loves and looks good from 10 feet away.
The car is not a virgin and has a little road rash and a couple dings but overall is in great condition and the body is very straight. There is a little cancer on the drivers rear quarter and behind the front passenger side wheel. The trunk, chassis, rockers, and floors are near perfect. The seats, door panels, dash, dash pad, carpet, and headliner are beautiful and look almost new. The old boy that owned the car filled the interior full of dryer sheets before parking it and the rodents stayed away. The vinyl top has some small defects from age and dryness and a small tear on the drivers side about the size of a 50 cent piece. New tops are available for less than a $100 from Ames Performance. The car was owned by a single man and after talking to his nephew that handled the estate he didn’t think anyone had ever been in the back seat. The chrome and glass are very nice. It even still has two of the original T3 headlamps in it. The car still had the original tires and wheels on it when we pulled it out of the garage and they will be included in the purchase of the car. They were 14 X 7 inch steel wheels with Rally optioned hub caps mounted on GoodYear G78-14 inch polyglass tires. Not sure if I would trust them to drive any distance so I bought a set of 15 X 7 Halibrand style aluminum wheels mounted on Cooper Cobra radial tires and put them on. If the new owner does not want the aftermarket aluminum wheels, I will install the original tires and wheels.
The car is an excellent driver and runs, shifts, stops as it should. The car has tons of torque and can boil the tires on demand. It starts up on the first hit of the starter and can cruise all day in the heat without getting hot. I have driven the SJ over 500 trouble free miles since getting her on the road. It also has a very nice ride to it. I have never been around the big old Pontiacs very much and am amazed at how well it rides, it just floats over the road. I have done the hard work for the next owner so they can enjoy the car as is or put a new paint job on it and have a show stopper. I drove the Grand Prix to a couple cruise nights and the people really like the big land cruiser. It always draws a bigger crowd than my 1932 Ford Hiboy. Comparing the investment I have in each one the Grand Prix is the best Bang for the buck.
The Pontiac is a used automobile so it is being sold in AS IS condition with no warranty written or implied. I have a clean and clear Iowa motor vehicle title in my name that is ready to be transferred to the new owner upon full payment.
I would like a $500 non refundable deposit within 2 days of the close of the auction with the remainder of the balance to be paid in full within 7 days. The car will not leave until all funds have cleared my bank. I can assist in getting the car delivered but the cost for transport is the responsibility of the new owner. I have 100% positive feedback and do not sell junk. I have many additional pictures of the car that can be sent out and will answer any and all question that you may have. I encourage the potential buyer to come inspect the car in person and take it for a drive. I have nothing to hide on this old girl, the car is what it is, just a solid ole Pontiac coupe that is ready to be enjoyed this summer and provide miles of smiles. I ran a Hagerty valuation program on the SJ and will include it with the sale. The reserve is set well below what the car is worth. You would be hard pressed to find a cleaner, original 69 SJ Grand Prix with all of the mechanical work done to it for the money.
I plan on letting the auction play out and run to the end. I have no plans on adding a Buy It Now to end the auction early. I have watched what these cars have been selling for on Ebay, auctions, and privately and feel I have this one priced at a bargain for what the new owner will be getting. Thanks for looking at my auction and good luck bidding!!
