1979 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am
The sporty Firebird was Pontiac's answer to the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro. The car combined an available big V-8 with aggressive, attention-grabbing styling and delivered it in a relatively practical four-passenger package. Like it's pony-car competitors, the rear-wheel-drive Firebird offered tire-smoking power and impressive acceleration. The F-body platform on which it and the Camaro were based, however, was arguably well past its prime by the early 2000s. 2002 was the final year of production for Pontiac's iconic but dated speed machine. The Trans Am was the pumped-up, V-8-powered model.
For consignment not as 'loud' as the Gold Special Edition Trans Am, and not quite as menacing as the Black Special Edition Trans Am, this Silver 10th Anniversary car combines a typical Pontiac attitude with a refined look that was way ahead of its time. Complete with the oversized "screaming chicken" on the hood that was only available on the 10th anniversary T/A's, and all nicely preserved we give you the Platinum Poly edition of the 10th anniversary rollout, and the last gasp of muscle car freedom for the 1970's.
Exterior
Code 15L/16U Platinum Poly and Dark Charcoal bathes the exterior of this 15,363 original mile car. It will stand out in a crowd, and with a black and shades of gray with red accenting screaming chicken decal, silver badging and polished turbine style wheels we have a first-place winner. All fender flaring, neoprene bumpers are slightly darker (Dark Charcoal) and a rear spoiler looks fab with no faults in the gaps or paint. Up top it features silver tinted glass for the removable "T" top and all trimmings for the windows are in black. A shaker hood with the scoop is looking out through the hole in the hood badged TA 6.6. Add on some louvers for the rear glass, and we are more than good to go...like hell!
Interior
Swinging the long doors and getting it is difficult to just not stop and stare at the shiny silver smooth vinyl door panels showing power windows and a side view mirror toggle. These panels have a beautiful stitched inset silver panel with some maroon piping and an embroidered flying phoenix for some accenting and visual enjoyment. We are greeted with high back buckets in front and a 2 plus 2 bench for the back. These seats are all excellent and show in silver inserts and brighter silver bolsters. The rear tubs for the buckets are silver as well. The factory provides the shifter, and upfront a circle machined aluminum dash houses black faced original gauges. This silver accented car comes with the removable silver tinted roof panels, air-conditioning, remote decklid release, power door locks, power windows, tilt steering wheel, AM/FM/scanning station radio, and power antenna. Excellent carpeting in gray floods all floors and the trunk has a custom carpeted liner with a black phoenix pattern inserted in it.
Drivetrain
All numbers matching for this anniversary, in the form of a T/A 6.6 Pontiac 400ci V8 with a single 4bbl on top (Rochester Q Jet), and a Borg Warner Super T-10 4-speed manual tranny also numbers matching. On the back a 10-bolt 3.23 posi rear axle putting power to the ground.
Undercarriage
Some patina, some surface rust, but all structurally sound in its construction and framing. Surface rust is contained to the usual suspects (driveshaft, suspension and slightly on the framing) while tubs and rockers are in excellent condition. Independent coil spring suspension for the front, and leaf springs for the back, as well as power disc brakes all around.
Drive-Ability
Slipping into this car was a time capsule ride harkening back to the Smokey and the Bandit days of the late 70's. She fired right up and performed awesomely on our test track. All functions are wonderfully working perfectly save for the air conditioning and noted is a broken A/C vent on the passenger's side (a minor inconvenience).
A low mileage, painted Platinum Poly and Dark Charcoal, 10th anniversary edition car and somewhat rare with a mere 15,363 original miles sporting the 400ci Pontiac/4-speed (BW transmission) option, and even fewer left surviving. Happy Anniversary!
