1965 Plymouth Fury Convertible Pace Car Additional Info:
We are proud to offer for sale a 1965 Plymouth Fury that is one of only 35 festival Pace Car examples that were used on the track during race day in 1965! This is a beautifully kept and completely rust free example surviving Plymouth Fury with the original West Coast owner for 25 years. Currently, this classic Plymouth displays only 35,000 miles on the odometer and is complete with tons of documentation, literature, and display gear! A rare car to find on the market and a classic that is show ready!
History About Plymouth's Sport Fury:
Plymouth launched its new 3rd generation Fury lineup in 1965, which included the new and luxurious Sport Fury model! The Sport Fury was selected as the official Pace Car for the prestigious 49th running of the Indianapolis 500 that year, a first for Plymouth! Approximately 1300 cars were made for dealerships throughout the country, but only 35 festival cars were selected to participate at the actual track event, like the example seen here. Each one was to carry a race driver during pre-race activities around the course. This is certainly a unique opportunity to own a rare classic Plymouth with rich history!

This Sport Fury Pace was built April 2nd, 1965, paced the 49th Annual Indianapolis 500 on May 31st, 1965, and then sold "new" to the first registered owner on July 7th, 1965. It would stay with its original owner for nearly 25 years. It resided in Arizona and California for all those years! It comes with the original owner's manual identifying the original owner and dealer typed inside, original registration receipts from 1968-1986, and AACA recognition letter. Special features on this car include Indy 500 dash plaque; red, white, and blue badging; hand holds on the rear fenders; "Official Plymouth Pace Car" decals including race date on each side; an original Indianapolis 500 race day program, a framed picture of a Plymouth festival car in action with the winning driver, Jimmy Clark, that afternoon; unique front bumper guard, rear bumper flag holders, and unique floor displays holding the various race flags used during a normal race!
It went on to be part of the Carlson Collection and was last offered to the public in December 2011. The new Ohio caretaker would take possession with only 32,545 miles on the odometer. He would enjoy this rare pace car for nearly 9 years, adding just under 2,500 miles to the odometer. Service records provided include new water pump, brake master cylinder, and fuel pump in 2012; BF Goodrich Redline 225/70R14 radial tires and fresh exhaust manifold gaskets in April 2015; rebuilt transmission in May 2015; and all new steering box, rebuilt steering pump and hoses in 2016. These were largely done to cure some leaks from older seals and gaskets. Just this past April (2020), the battery was replaced, new valve gaskets installed, the brake fluid completely flushed, and the fuel filler hose replaced. It continues to run and drive as new with an odometer reading of 35,031 miles. It should make for a terrific acquisition to any collection, but certainly a must have for any Pace Car collector!
