Please note there are 73 pictures and a video, but eBay only puts the first 40 in their gallery, so yoj have to scroll through the description to see all of them.
Thia is a good driver level Amphicar. Its presentable enough that you can be proud of it but not too nice that you'd be worried about leaving it parked in a busy parking lot. Most Amphicars are either major projects or super nice fully restored cars, this one is one of the rare ones that shows up that hits that sweet spot in the middle.
This was a one family owned car until earlier this year. Bought new in 1964 by an engineer, this was one of two Amphicars that he owned (the other being a fully restored red one that the family sold off a couple years ago). When he passed his wife kept both cars going eventually passing this one down to their son. I was told the mileage is accurate and the car was only driven locally around the Auburn area. It was taken to Folsom Lake regularly to go swimming and was also used in a large pond on their 100 acre ranch. The owners were huge Amphicar enthusiasts and belonged to the Amphicar club and attended a variety of events over the years.
The car is very solid and rust free, the story goes that their ranch hand sprayed the bottom half of the car the darker blue to match all the buildings and equipment on their ranch. The doors shut very nicely, all the glass is in great shape except for the passenger vent window which is luckily just flat glass and easily replaced.
The top and interior and show their age but are useable as is for just general driving around use and keeping the sun off...
Mechanically its a driver, it starts right up and runs like a sewing machine. It shifts theough all the gears, and the brakes were recently gone through by a local German car shop. They replaced wheel cylinders, brake shoes, etc. They also replaced the fuel pump, starter, generator, and did a basic tune up. Receipts for that work are included.
The propellers both work just as they should, I have a video of them I can send to anyone interested, eBay only allows me to upload one video.
I have not taken the car "swimming" but was told it last swam around 5 years ago and shouldn't have anything to prevent that besides some tired door seals.
The car comes with its original owners manual, factory workshop manual, a variety of receipts and Amphicar literature, a couple speciality tools, etc.
Only 3878 Amphicars were ever made, you'd be hard pressed to find a better driver level car like this one that doesn't cost what a fully restored one goes for. Its definitely unique and I can safely say that I have never owned a car that gets as much attention as this (and I also own an Isetta so thats saying something...)
