This Opel is a true, ready to drive survivor. Easy to maintain and repair, it’ll be the only one at Cars & Coffee, guaranteed. It needs nothing other than a new owner.
Up for auction: 1970 Opel Rekord C 1900 2-door sedan with the efficient and reliable high-compression, 1.9-liter cam-in-head inline-4 engine used in many Opels for many years. It’s upgraded with a Weber 32/36 DGEV carburetor, replacing the original, often troublesome, Solex carb. Rear wheel drive with a floor-shift, synchronized four-speed manual gearbox. Finished in Gold Metallic with black graphics and a vinyl-look roof coating, it rides on 13″ steel wheels with new whitewall 175/80R-13 tires and original chrome hubcaps. Has a working Philips AM/FM radio, front lap belts, a working heater and heated rear window. The car has spent the last 10 years and 10k kilometers (~6k miles) with the current owner. Recent works includes new tie-rod ends, spark plugs, ignition points, and condenser. This Opel has a clear Minnesota title in the seller’s name.
Sold from 1966-1971, the Opel Rekord C was offered in a variety of body styles, across which 1,276,681 units were produced in total.
There is possible evidence of some repaint under prior ownership, but no evidence of any prior collision or rust repair. Free of any rust-through; only very minor and small areas of surface rust where there are paint chips in the wheel wells, etc. Minor dents and dents are noted. No cracks in any of the glass; small single minor chip in the windshield. H4 halogen headlamp pods and lenses have been retrofitted for greatly improved lighting. The original headlight pods and lenses are included in the sale. All flasher and marker lights work.
The suspension features upper and lower A-arms in front, anti-sway bars, coil springs at each corner and a 5-link live rear axle. Stopping is from power-assisted front disc and rear drum brakes. Steering is through a non-assisted recirculating ball set-up.
Interior features cloth seating surfaces (no tears), and black Opel floor mats. A perimeter stain in the white headliner is due to the factory adhesive, common to Opels of this era. The dashboard lighting works but is somewhat dim. Front lap belts have been added.
Instrumentation includes a 200-km/h speedometer, a non-working clock, and coolant temperature and fuel level gauges. The five-digit odometer shows 31k kilometers (~19k miles), about 10k of which were added by the seller. Total mileage is unknown.
The 1.9-liter inline-four is a high-compression, cam-in-head unit identical to contemporary Opel GT, 1900, Kadett, and Manta A models, all imported to the US. Rated at 90 horsepower when new, it’s been fitted with an Opel Manta-sourced air-filter housing, and a cast Opel GT valve cover. The exhaust system is non-original but works and is leak-free.
Buyers has 3 weeks after conclusion of auction to pick up the vehicle.
