Why spring for a Cadillac Series 62 when you could get the same features for less money on an Olds 98? That’s probably what ad taglines boasted about in the mid-1950s when it came to the General’s C-body cars. MotoeXotica Classic Cars is pleased to present this 1955 Oldsmobile 98 Deluxe Holiday Hardtop Coupe. Overall this car is very original and a survivor Oldsmobile that the next owner will really enjoy and appreciate. Please take a look at the photos of the original undercarriage which really tells the story of this Oldsmobile!

This example was assembled in General Motors’ Linden, New Jersey factory. Finished in Polar White (code 60) over Turquoise (code 70), the car’s paint and trim are in overall great shape though there are minor blemishes upon inspection, please see photos.

The car displays straight and solid bodywork, its chrome bumpers are in great shape, its engine bay is in satisfactory order and the battery appears in decent condition. This Olds rolls on older Universal wide whitewall tires, size 7.60-15 at all four corners. Each tire is mounted to a steel wheel topped by a factory wheel cover. All tires and wheel covers are in very good condition.

In that engine bay is Oldsmobile’s 324 CID Rocket V-8 with dual exhausts. The dual-snorkel air cleaner is one ofthe’50s most famous and was found on everything from Cadillac to Packard toOldsmobile. Beneath the air cleaner is a four-barrel Rochester Quadra-Jet helpingthe engine crank out 202 hp. Like all of Oldsmobile’s V-8s, this is a Lansing engine, made in the Michigan city of the same name. It’s mated to a Hydramatic four-speed automatic transmission with 3.42 gearing. Driver convenience features abound on this car – power steering, power brakes, power windows, two-way power front seat and GM’s Autronic Eye automatic headlight dimmer.

Inside, the cars turquoise patterned cloth and ivory leather interior (code 339) is overall clean and breathtakingly sharp. The turquoise carpet is in very good order, as is the car’s headliner and two-spoke Deluxe steering wheel. The instrument panel, with its full array of gauges, and the inner door panels, echo the rest of the interior’s theme. The horn, left rear window and heater blower motor, antenna are inoperable. A white column-mounted gearshift lever and factory AM radio complete the car’s interior.

In 1955, the Oldsmobile 98 again had a longer wheelbase than the 88. Standard equipment included turn signals, bumper guards, stainless steel moldings, dual horns, cigarette lighter, front and rear floor mats, inside rearview mirror, foam rubber seat cushions, stainless steel rocker panel moldings, front seatback robe cord, spun glass hood insulation, rear window ventiplanes, electric clock, stainless steel wheel discs, custom cushion lounge seats front and rear, hand brake light, courtesy light package, padded dash, Deluxe steering wheel with horn ring, and windshield washer. Upholstery choices were covert and patterned cloth, leather and pattern cloth, leather and nylon, and leather and dimple leather. Standard tire size was 7.70 by 15 inches. The turning diameter was 43 ft. The Hydramatic automatic transmission gear selector had a S for Super, not Second. Super was used for better hill-climbing performance.

Competition to this Olds in 1955 included Buick’s Roadmaster, Cadillac’s Series 62, Chrysler’s Windsor Deluxe Newport, DeSoto’s Fireflite, Dodge’s Coronet Lancer, Lincoln’s Capri Special Custom Sport Coupe, Mercury’s Monterey, Packard’s Clipper Super Panama and Pontiac’s Chieftain.

This car will absolutely turn heads at a car show or a cruise night event. Many people will smile, ask questions and come to you to tell you stories about their Olds 98 or their parents’ or grandparents’ cars. If you’d like to find a classic, mid-50s American car that isn’t a Chevrolet, you should make a point of stopping by MotoeXotica Classic Cars today and checking out this fully-loaded Olds 98 before someone else does.
