A BIT OF MINI COOPER HISTORY
It seems that everyone loves the Mini! And what’s not to love? It’s so small, and it’s so cute, but really there’s so much more about this little car to love.
What most people know about the Mini comes from what they saw in the movie “The Italian Job”, which debuted in THE 1960s and in 2003. What most people don’t realize is that the Mini (borne from a sketch on the back of an envelope) is now 58 years old and first achieved its cult status back in the 1960s!
Later knighted – for his efforts – by the Queen of England. Turkish born Alex Issigonis first designed the mini as an automotive hedge against soaring oil prices emanating from the Suez Canal crisis back in 1958 for British Motor Corporation (BMC). As from its diminutive size, its engineering and construction was considered revolutionary. It featured a sideways mounted front wheel drive motor and transmission combination (which relied on oil from a common reservoir) that bolted directly onto the front of the car’s body. It’s Monocoque (Unibody shell – its rigid sheet metal frame – was designed for maximum strength, minimal weight and seating for four adults. Barely over 9 feet in length, weighing in at less than 1500 lbs. and propelled by livery of only 34 horses, the Mini was well received by the British public but only became famous over the objections of its creator, Sir Alex Issigonis enter stage right John Cooper, already a legend of having built race cars for the likes of Manuel Fangio, Jack Brabham, Bruce McLaren and Stirling Moss, Cooper recognized the performance potential of the Mini’s lightweight design and approached BMC with the idea of a “supped-up” version. Sir Alex was initially opposed to the idea of taking efficiency oriented design and turning it into a sports car, but finally won over to the idea of taking with the popular response to the Mini Cooper having first appeared in 1961 harnessing 21 more horsepower, wider tyres, a 100 MPH speedo, and two tone paint job, John Coper’s modifications proved the essential element in creating the car’s wide acceptance. In 1963 the Mini Cooper “S” was introduced with over 70 horsepower and catapulted the little car into automotive history.
In 1964 BMC entered its little Mini Cooper “S” as a competitor against the likes of Ford, Mercedes Benz, and Citroen at the famous race held at Monte Carlo. The rest is history! The Mini cooper went on to summarily win the Monte Carlo rally three more times through 1967 and was catapulted to the global spotlight! The Mini had not only earned its racing stripes, but also the popular appeal of the emerging 60s generation.
Along with Lava Lamps, Flower Power, and “Mini Skirts”, the Mini Cooper represented an era; today the re-engineered Mini, by BMW in 2002-2017, has helped the diminutive champion regain its pop icon status. With the original Mini owned by Peter Sellers, Ringo Starr, and even Enzo Ferrari (who owned two of them), the fame of the” Mini” has again been invigorated by the celebrities who’ve been attracted to it. Popularized anew by Michael Caine, Charlie Theron and Mark Wahlberg in the “Italian Job”, and by Matt Damon in “The Bourne identity”, the Mini has again captured the hearts and minds of the young at heart everywhere. Both fun to drive and “cute” to boot, who can resist the MINI?
