1952 MG TD
The first MG TDs were manufactured in late 1949, and the model was formally announced in January of 1950. Only 98 TDs were made in 1949, 2 RHD and 96 LHD. There were a total of four model years - 1950, 1951, 1952, and 1953, and the models are nowadays referred to as the MG TD, TD2 and TD/C MK II.
For consignment a nice example of an MG TD from 1952. Presented in red, it has been faithfully restored and repainted. For the early 50's British sports car enthusiast, and collector, this car is a serious bellwether for future cars to come out of the MG lineup, as well as the factory that built them moving on to design the Austin Healy. This car was a 28 year project for our consigner, and is now sadly parting ways, benefitting a new wide eyed owner.
Exterior
Nice red paint covers all original sheet metal that is straight, gaps that you can measure with a micrometer (to a decimal point!) and an older paint job. A few chips and patina overall would best describe the exterior. From fenders to running boards, body panels to hood flaps, gas tank to rear bumper, the original design is retained. The front grille with correct red inserts matching vertical slats which are surrounded by unspoiled chrome and topped with an octagonal chromed radiator cap will leave you gazing when the car comes and goes. Beige canvas is reserved for the top, and a nice beige tonneau cover, are just a few of the highlights you'll see on this car. Thin whitewall tires have the silver drilled steel wheels and shiny MG badged caps in the center.
Interior
As we gaze around at the passenger compartment where we see a new burl walnut solid wood bordered by beige piping and a red dash top in metal. The instrument and knob cluster background in contrasting chrome is in the center. Fronting the driver are large round gauges behind the big wood rimmed steering wheel. 2 circular gauges are in front of the driver. A single solid tuck and roll bench back, with a bucket seat in the same tuck and roll tan pattern create the 2 comfortable seats. New black carpeting is on the floors, and a small storage area is behind the seats. Small door panels are stitched tan leather and decidedly British.
Drivetrain
A lift of the cowls you will feast your eyes on an older restoration of the engine bay. A yellow valve cover and red block 4 popper in 1250cc displacement is stuffed under this hood. The engine is original to this car, and it has a set of SU H2 semi downdraft carbs to feed it. On back is a 4-speed manual transmission, and a whopping 5.125 rear gear ratio!
Undercarriage
Drum brakes are seen, a new wiring harness, and a neat good looking lower rocker area, frame and floorpans barely even have dust on them but do have undercoating. New front shocks, and Koni rear telescoping shocks are now installed. A stainless exhaust is seen snaking its way from front to rear.
A true original metal MG that looks like a dream. One truly has to experience this car to appreciate it, in its mostly restored condition. For the serious collector, or original car enthusiast, make it here quickly would be the word to the wise. And if it is snowing or raining, wear your Wallies! Some side notes worthy of mention.
