1981 Mercury Lynx Additional Info:
1981 Jet Electrica (Mercury Lynx)
Completely drivable and 100% electric car built by Jet Industries of Austin, TX. This is not a conversion. It is a factory built electric vehicle.
Jet purchased these new from Ford as "gliders" without internal combustion components and built them as electric vehicles.
If you're wanting to get into an EV, acquiring one of the older lead battery types is the way to go. Not only is it more economical but
all EV's, whether modern or from the 80's, share the same basic EV drive system parts. The modern ones simply have more electronics attached.
Many folks are purchasing these lead EV's and converting them to lithium and saving thousands of dollars compared to buying a newer EV.
The one main reason for converting is that the weight of the lead batteries robs the car of range and ultimate performance. Most lead cars are just not meant
for long trips or highway speeds. This car is a perfect candidate for conversion to lithium and would lose more than 800 lbs in total weight. That's significant.
Check out EV West on the web. These guys are creating older lithium powered cars that have great power and range. My suggestion would be buy a lead
based EV and convert it to lithium, most of the work has already been done for you.
