1980 Mercedes-Benz 400-Series Additional Info:
I bought this vehicle with the intention of restoring it, but have made little progress and lost interest since. Also time and budget never seem to be enough (I still have a MB W126). It has some issues which is why it's not driveable and buyer should pick up on a trailer. From the documents I have it spent it's life in Colorado. It was once repainted, not the greatest job, but still better than your average original paint on a 36 year old vehicle. Except for some typical cracks in the dash, interior looks very clean and in great shape for it's age. Not sure if you can tell from the pics, but windows (except windshield) have a tint.
These are the issues...
Transmission 3rd gear jumps out. When I bought it, line pressure was jacked up all the way making it run like it had a shift kit... When I lowered it to a reasonable level, 3rd gear started jumping out every once in a while (THAT's why they did it...), but stopping and shifting it in Reverse & back in Drive surprisingly would fix it for a while. Over time this has become worse and meanwhile the 3rd gear would barely stay in. I suspect a broken spring or something that holds the oil pressure for the clutches, but haven't taken off the control body to investigate further. Flushing the tranny didn't have any effect.
Second, engine feels low on power. Knowing this is the low output 160 HP motor introduced with the 1980 model year 450, but still. Next thing I was going to look into is timing/chains. Also runs a little rough in idle, along with a low indicated oil pressure. Does not use more than normal oil though!
Brakes need serviced. Light is on and some of the pads are down to the metal backing.
Instrument cluster NOT included, since I had it rebuilt for $450 and NOT selling it with the vehicle. I will sell it separately, it's the one shown in the pic. In the pic showing the dash it's the original one with 85 MPH speedo. That I replaced with a 160 MPH from a 1979 model, and had North Hollywood Speedometer swap gears, repair clock, reprint pointers, restore the whole thing.
As far as rust, pics give you a pretty good idea. It's really not much more than these spots.
The ornament and trim pieces are missing from the grill - they were dented from rocks so I removed them and was going to get new ones off of ebay
Electric sunroof isn't working, haven't investigated further here.
What I've done so far...
Changed engine and transmission oil+filtersNew spark plugs, ignition wire set, cap, and rotorReplaced standard air filter with a K&N (allright... along with ignition parts just to see if that did anything to the engine's performance, to no avail...)Replaced heater servo with a refurbished unit (original was cracked, and bypassed... )
Had instrument cluster rebuilt as mentioned above, which is why it's NOT part of this auction. A used cluster can be had off of ebay for cheap.
I also have a brand NOS complete US head light set with blinkers I will be selling separately.
That's it, anything else, email me and thanks for looking!!
