I am selling my 1972 350SL. I have owned it for about 15 years and have enjoyed every summer of driving. I listed this same car last year. However when it came to pulling the trigger, I could not. It is not the case this year. I will sell the car. I will consider what I believe to be reasonable offers
This is an unusual car. Brought over from Europe a year before the 450SL was imported to the U.S. The original owner purchased the car in Europe during a vacation. Shipped back to the U.S and drove it for many years. It was sold to the 2nd owner some time in the early 90’s. If I understand correctly, it was intended to be a anniversary present. That did not go as planned and I became the 3rd owner of the car via an Ebay auction.
Having been made for the European market the odometer is in Kilometers per hour not miles per hour. There is a cute little map on the inside of the glove box that will take you from Brussels to Paris. All the other aspects of the car are, as one would expect. Left hand drive, 3-speed auto shift on the floor. All gauges work, except the clock. After market CD/radio. Overall the car is a 7.5 to 8+. Runs great. Starts every time, goes like a bat of hell. Great handling! It has the small V-8 engine, about 215 CID. There is plenty of power.
The body is in good to excellent shape. No major dents, bangs or bruises. The issues with the car are; plastic windows on convertible top must be replace. Cloth top requires some moderate re-stitching, otherwise in very serviceable shape. There is an intermittent problem with the interior lights. Dash lights are inoperable at this time. However I drive only in the summer and seldom in the evening. Exterior lamps are all operational. The seating is in fair shape. It has several separations and will require repair or replacement. The seating is comfortable. The passenger seat does not fold forward. There is a missing piece of chrome on the passenger side that completes the fashionable look when the convertible top is down. The under carriage is solid, no rust. Tires are excellent and the front end is tight and responsive. The trunk lock failed and I had it punched out. My golf clubs were inside! It is time to address the engine. It has begun to burn some oil and there is a slight leak from the oil pan plug. I’m guessing a basic rings and values retooling will fix the issues. Hoses and cables are all good. Hard top is included and in excellent condition.
