1993 Mercedes-Benz 500E Pre-Limited
Presented at the IAA in 1993 / Limited package product demonstrator / Factory show car
As the iconic W124 500E was entering its next evolution in the product catalogue of Mercedes-Benz, a quest for special edition models and packages was introduced at product development. The 1993 IAA (International Auto Salon in Frankfurt) saw the world premiere of the C36 AMG (W202), and displayed several new concepts to gauge consumer appeal and interest.
This time around, the W124 500E was shown with the concept of a special visual package called “Limited” to become available for the model year 1994 releasing that Fall season. Such package featured a new interior option with special seat inserts in various colors and Evo style wheels, replacing the 8-spoke standard equipment. Special exterior colors for the Limited Package were also launched. Following the Evolution vs. Revolution product philosophy of Mercedes-Benz, chassis #011620 was fitted with a green Limited interior and Evo wheels and was selected to be the display 500E at the stand. Green was selected because news media was printed in newspapers in black and white and green offers higher contrast and visual detail for press pictures. Product development representatives would engage with visitors and members of the press during the show to gauge interest and reception of the product package. The study resulted in the approval of the release of the Limited option package, which is supported by an accompanying internal memorandum of Mercedes-Benz.
Built in Sindelfingen/Zuffenhausen with the purpose of becoming a static show display car as per factory data-card and MB VIN decoding and finished in 199U blue black metallic over a basic blue fabric interior. This car still sports the gray lower cladding of earlier pre-facelift models. Subsequently for the Ltd package, Saffire black was chosen and one of the exterior color options.
Being a marketing product concept demonstrator, instead of a brand-new model or prototype, this car did not get comprehensive press coverage as the official launch of the Limited Package followed afterward.
In consultation with Helmut Hizal (MKB) and Christian Sturm (W124 Club), this car appears in the W124 registry as the car presented at the 1993 IAA as the Limited predecessor. This car was also sporting the S-OM-500 first registration in Germany.
During its life, #011620 found its way to a short ownership in Japan, returning afterward to Sweden and Germany, before making its way to America in 2021.
Records show consistent and periodic servicing and TüV successful testing while in Germany and Sweden, which is evidenced in how well this car performs on the road. Odometer shows close to 69K kms (~43K miles). Exterior is very well kept and presents in outstanding condition all around. Interior is very impressive as well and presents minor weathering on the surface.
VIN is WDB1240361C011620
