1988 Mercedes Benz 560SL In 1971 Mercedes was poised to replace their extremely successful "Pagoda"generation SL sports car. After an 8 year run, Mercedes had sold over 48,000 units with over 30% of them going to the United States. With this in mind, Mercedes set out to design a new SL with its sights squarely set on the US market. What they developed quickly became the ultimate symbol of success in the 1970s and 1980s around the world and stayed in production for over 18 years. In that time, they produced over 300,000 units of which nearly 70% came to the United States. Over the course of the next 18 years, Mercedes changed little about the R107 beyond engine and gearbox choices as they received few complaints about the cars and consistently bested their prior year's sales.The ultimate SL from this generation was the 560SL sold in the United States between 1986 and 1989. This 1988 Mercedes Benz 560SL was sold new at Barrier Mercedes and first sold on 12/28/1987. Finished in a beautiful shade of Diamond Blue Metallic, this 560SL is in absolutely outstanding condition and does not look like a vehicle with 75,914 miles on the odometer. Although the SL was never built to win races, it had gobs of low down torque that made it plenty fast around town and gave it loads of passing power at interstate speeds. Less than 3,000 miles ago, this 560SL was treated to a thorough servicing at Park Place LTD that included new timing chain, new upper timing chain rails, new timing chain tensioners, new cam timing gears, new valve cover gaskets and seals, new drive belts and new spark plugs. This work was done to ensure reliable, smooth running for years to come and is a massive benefit to have all of these things already completed before you purchase the car. At the same time, the fluid in the 4-speed automatic was changed, new differential fluid was added as was new brake fluid and coolant so this car should provide years of trouble free enjoyment for its new owner. The 560SL was one of the most iconic cars to come out of Mercedes Benz in the 1980s and remains the perfect usable classic car today.
