Selected as "European Car of the Year" for 1974, the Mercedes-Benz W116 was one of the first models to be officially called an S-Class. Produced from September 1972 until 1980, this series of automobiles were the flagship luxury sedans offered under the Mercedes name. Unique to the W116 was independent suspension and disc brakes on all four wheels. A variety of vehicle models were based on the W116 chassis including 280S through 280SEL models, 350SE/SEL models, 450SE/SEL along with 450 SEL 6.9, and finally the 300 SD sedan.
North America was not a huge market for the W116. The U.S. received the 2.8L six-cylinder in the S and SE models, the 4.5L V8 in SE and SEL models, the 6.9L V8 in SEL models, and the 300 SD (diesel). Due to modifications demanded by the government, U.S. models of the W116 were described by journalists as if a "beautiful car was beaten with the malaise ugly stick." Although they might not be the most desirable of the Mercedes' offerings, they were constructed with many safety features that made them quite study. These features included four-wheel anti-lock brakes, deformation zones (crumple zones) in the front and rear, padded dashboard, deformable switches and controls, and wraparound turn signals for additional visibility.
Displayed here is a 1976 Mercedes-Benz 280S Sedan. Shown in a dark red exterior with black interior, this sedan emits a sense of luxury that is known under the Mercedes name. With matching painted wheels, the exterior of this vehicle is good for its age. All the chrome moldings are in good shape and accent the dark hue well. Under the hood there is a 28L 4bbl inline 6-cylinder that has been paired with an automatic gearbox. The previous owner notes that this vehicle has been serviced by Community Automotive in Grand Rapids, Michigan. For the interior, you will find brand new seats that are wrapped in black leather and appear to be quite opulent. The dash is accented with woodgrain inserts and this vehicle comes with air conditioning for any undesired heat waves.
Not flashy or super sporty in nature, this Mercedes might be easily overlooked.
