This 1991 Mercedes-Benz 500SL is finished in Signal Red over Palomino leather. Power is from a 5.0-liter V8 paired with a four-speed automatic transmission. Maintenance under current ownership is said to have included brake work, instrument cluster repair and windshield washer reservoir repair. This R129 is offered with amatching hardtop and stand, service records, and a clean Texas title. The bodyis finished in Signal Red. The car is fitted with a Dark fabric soft top. A body-colored factory hardtop and a rolling stand are included in the sale. (See photos)
The interior is upholstered in Palomino leather with matching carpets and burl wood accents. Amenities include power-adjustable seats with memory, automatic climate control, a Kenwood aftermarket stereo, driver and passenger airbags. The operation of the anti-theft door locking system works via the door locks, the trunk lock or the key fob. Factory instrumentation includes a 160-mph speedometer, a tachometer, and gauges for oil pressure, fuel economy and water temperature. The six-digit mechanical odometer displays just over 71k miles. The odometer has not worked since purchase but receipts indicate that the real mileage is close to what is shown as the car has only been sparingly driven for the past 3 years. Mercedes used plastic gears in these odometers. It is common for them not to work as the plastic deteriorates over time.
The convertible top works with no issues as does the roll bar. Manual operation of the roll bar works fine. It is impossible to test all of the roll bar functions as it is supposed to automatically come up in an accident.
The instrument panel condensers were replaced. This caused intermittent problems with the turn signals and other instrumentation which is common in these cars. The 5.0-liter 32-valve V8 was factory rated at 322 horsepower and produced 332lb-ft of torque when new. Maintenance in May 2020 included an oil change, and a recharge and repair of the air conditioning system. The front suspension was totally rebuilt in 2017.
The original sticker is included in the photo array provided. A Mercedes video owner’s manual of this model is on YouTube here. There is a YouTube video showing the functioning top here. A video showing the car starting, backing out of a garage and pulling back in is here.
The CarFax report shows 3 accidents in the 90s. I have been over all the sheet metal parts of the car with magnets and found no filler. I have had several mechanics work on the car and they saw no evidence of accident damage.
