This 1985 Mercedes-Benz 380SL was first sold on 3/27/85 by Don Rasmussen Co. of Portland, Oregon to the original owner who resided in San Mateo, California. Total retail price of $45,603.00. She kept the car well maintained, performing all inspections and services at factory recommended intervals. The vehicle ended up at RAB Motors in San Rafael, California, where it was sold to the second owner on 6/28/93 with an odometer reading of 89,003 miles. My purchase of the vehicle was on 5/15/19 with an odometer reading of 110,815 miles. I am the third registered owner of this vehicle.
The original window sticker included in the factory literature states the following:Model: 380SL 2 Passenger Coupe/Roadster
Engine: 3.8 liter light alloy OHC V-8 with CIS fuel injection
Optional equipment: 494 California emission control equipment, 740 Black soft top
Paint & Upholstery: 199 Black Pearl Metallic, 271 Black Leather
Standard Features: 4 speed automatic transmission with torque converter, power assisted steering, electronic cruise control, automatic climate control, central locking system, power assisted four wheel disc brakes, anti-lock braking system, steel belted radial-ply tires, fully independent suspension, forged light alloy wheels, electrically heated rear window on hard top, electric window lifts, tinted glass, breakerless transistorized ignition, electronic am/fm stereo radio with cassette player, automatic antenna with selective height adjustment, 2-speed windshield wipers with 5-second interval mist control, tachometer, electrically operated right outside mirror, adjustable front bucket seats, front center folding arm rest, halogen head lamps, halogen fog lamps, front seat belt emergency tensioning retractors, & first aid kit.
This 380SL has been repainted once some time prior to June 1993 in the original color 199 Black Pearl Metallic. The door jams are still the original paint. No accident damage or body work has been detected by visual inspection. I have a clean CarFax that states no accidents have been reported. Paint has a very nice shine, but this car being a driver, has some minor rock chips on the front, some scratches, spots where the paint has been touched up, and a few door dings on the sides. The only rust on the car is in two spots on the exterior, where the paint has chipped off. One on the right side door front edge, where it meets the front fender. The other is on the left side quarter panel, where the left door meets, up high, right under the chrome trim. Close up photos are included. No rust anywhere else on the vehicle.
Before my purchase of this vehicle, in early 2019, the previous owner bought new Aspen Touring A/S tires in the correct size of 205/70R14. He also installed a brand new battery at the same time. After my purchase of this Mercedes, I performed the following work at 110,883 miles:
Double row timing chain, timing chain guide rails, and hydraulic timing chain tensioner replaced.
Camshaft oiler tube clips replaced.
Distributor cap, ignition rotor, distributor O-ring, ignition wires, and spark plugs replaced. Distributor removed, cleaned, and re-lubed.
Air filter, valve cover gaskets, air pump filter, fuel filter and some fuel lines replaced.
Transmission filter, transmission filter pan gasket, drain plug seal ring, shift linkage bushing, and ATF replaced.
Rear differential oil and power steering fluid changed.
Engine oil, filter, and filter seals changed. Now using Castrol 10-40w high mileage.
All German parts from OEM suppliers were used. See photo.
About a month ago, a new black Haartz German Sonnenland canvas convertible top was installed. All new genuine MB seals were installed for the soft top at the same time.
On 9/3/19 at 111,077 miles the air conditioning system was serviced and recharged. Pressurized with R-12 refrigerant, with no leaks detected. Now blows cold with a vent temperature of 49 degrees F.
This Mercedes passed its last California smog inspection on 3/18/19 with 110,557 miles.
The previous owner had the original Becker Grand Prix stereo am/fm/cassette radio replaced by a shop, and a Sony Xplod am/fm/cd/mp3/aux/sat. ready with remote control unit was installed. The original Becker is included in the sale, if you wish to re-install. At some point, a pair of 6x9 speakers were installed in the rear lower shelf area. Also a wind deflector screen was installed by the previous owner, that can be raised or lowered. Cuts down on 75% of the cabin air flow with the convertible top down.
The only issues that this car has is the cracked dash board, see close-up photo, and a non functioning clock which is located below the tachometer. The rest of the interior is in good shape. Has a pair of genuine MB floor mats.
Factory literature includes: Original window sticker, owner's manual booklet, maintenance booklet with vehicle data card, owner's service and warranty policy booklet, operation & care of 380SL tops booklet, Becker auto radio operation instructions, MB dealer directory booklet, operation of automatic climate control card, operation of cruise control card, factory approved service products card, and clear plastic pouch that it all fits in.
The car runs and drives fantastic. It is a pleasure to get it out on the open highway. Good power, steers and drives nice, smooth ride, and classic looks. Transmission shifts nice and smooth. Good brakes. Has hydraulic lifters, so you don't have to pull the valve covers, and adjust the valves every 10,000 miles. All lights and electrics work as they should minus the clock mentioned above. This 380SL has no mechanical issues. Get in and drive. Factory tinted glass is good. Has spare tire, jack, and factory tool kit.
I have a clean, clear California title for the vehicle in my name. This 1985 Mercedes-Benz 380SL is sold as is, where is. $500.00 deposit via PayPal if you Buy it Now within 24 hours.
